Steve, if you could get the 1/8 mile speed too and do a comparison from 1/8 to 1/4 acceleration as that would be far more relavent

The GTRs were better off the line.
The GTRs were travelling faster at 500m (ie were not being caught)
The GTRs were travelling much faster at 1.25miles.

I use the speed at 500m, since that is a determinant of rate of acceleration from meaningful speeds ie 30mph+. The traction really only has an effect on the ET (elapsed time), hence why I ignored the times, but they were also massivley faster.
If you are going to quote facts why not use these:
I wont be drawn on what the Cossies you mention were running, but at totb 1 mine had lowered boost & retarded ignition because of a WI pump failure it ran 13.3 @ 129 with a max of 450bhp. Topspeed was out for me on the day & only did 174.6 with 80 charge air. . Ran 1.25 miles @ 179.6 later with WI working OK, in the same Spec. Can you print the ET & Topspeeds of the 3 gtr you quoted please.

where?

my guesses:
on launch? 300bhp?
through the gears? 450bhp?
top speed? 400bhp?

Chip, I think a 4x4 Cossie launches BETTER than a Skyline not worse!!!!

In fact I KNOW it!

Skylines LOOK and sound amazing off the line but I think the Permanant 4x4 of the Cossies is a massive advantage at launching.

say someone has attended a rolling road day and their 4x4 cossie claims 400bhp ....

what sort of prices am i looking at to get from a standard skyline to 450bhp?

(ok these are very basic questions but i've only just started to look at skylines so i need an idiots guide !)

dont know yet Rich?? will defo be GTR though

Only been a passenger in a 32 so far, and even though that wasnt running right I knew immediately that I love the drive, so DEFO gona have to be a skyline next

would like a 34 but unless i win the lottery I really dont think I could spend that money aswell as keep the cossie, so will have to be a 32 or 33

cos 4x4 should launch better than a skyline.why? because a standard skyline actually starts off rwd,it is only after a short period of time that the front transfer starts to work and it becomes 4x4.

Exactly! Aduz is wrong and chip stating that a Skyline with 100bhp LESS could out launch a lighter Cossie is smoking CRACK

transmission losses are not a issue on launch, traction is the problem.once traction is ok the skyline will overtake the cos because it will convert to rwd,ie less transmision loss

next step, fit skyline box into cos4x4.fit manual torque split controller.full 4x4 at launch, vary torque split acording to traction available,to full rwd. bye bye skyline

Porkie, should have qualified what i was saying, i meant due to the way people drive each car.

300bhp skyline, the average launch = 6000rpm, sidestep clutch
400bhp cossie, the average launch = 2000rpm, gentley lift clutch, get to 5mph then nail it.

VERY few people i know with cossies are actually prepared to PROPERLY launch them.

In fact wasnt it being scared of doing just that which stopped you from entering TOTB last year in the end?

Porkie bet you felt a proper tit

I really think a lot of it is down to power to weight ration like Mr Rainbum said and obviously drive configuration, and lets not forget the driver and his/her experience level, we all drive differently,

No, I was entered and launched the life out of the car repeatedly last year at TOTB qualifying. Broke a rear drive shaft in the end.

I did not compete at TOTB as Simon could not get the SECS ECU working 100% and it was massively overfuelling...

Does that make ANY sense to you at all?

In my experience a standard 300bhp (or so) skyline will get away first at the lights from a cossie, when you try and launch a liner it just goes.
Try and launch a cossie and it either lights up cause its got not enough grip at the back, or it bogs, or it breaks something.

Do 100 launches back to back between a stnadard gearbox escos at 400bhp and a standard gearbox skyline at 300bhp and i bet the average 60ft time in the liner is lower.

I understand fully the maths of the lighter car etc, the theory is very simple, it just doesnt seem to happen like that normally in practice.

No that quote was poo! I was typing way tooo fast. I will accept my I meant to say you are trying to wriggle out of saying something that was bollox.

In my experience Cossies are no harder to launch than Skylines. I have launched at least 10 Different 4x4 Cossies of varying power and 5 Skylines

And I don't think you can talk about mechanical reliability over 100 launches in things like this!!!! thats just silly.

Skylines are FAR from the invincible driving machines people on here think they are! They break things as well. ALOT!

Porkie, any car driven hard breaks things a lot IME.

But a 400bhp 4wd cossie just does it quicker than most things

Its a cruel twist of fate that cossies are actually most fun to drive with 400bhp in third as well

I dont know any other results, thats just a cut n paste from some forum talk at the time.

Fact is, for about the same power there is little difference in performance, despite the weight.

When it comes to launching i suspect a lot of it comes from not having a back end that ends up looking like someone with a marrow up their arse when it squats down on launch too!

the s2 shell?
or just grow some balls and drive a 400bhp rwd cossie!
after the launch (provided you are NOT like me,sorry chip im not in that group, and dont blow the diff!) you will stuff a 400bhp skyline in a straight line!or supra,or most things you will EVER come across in the real world!BUT the same can be said for the skyline! 400-500bhp in the real world away from TOTB is VERY fast!
heck even my sub 200bhp is quick enough to see off most things i see!(except minis on roundabouts )
