Police took my car! :-( Advice?
Got pulled today for not wearing my seatbelt, and when they were checking the tax disk the guy noticed my little black plate with the VIN number or whatever it is you can see through the window was sitting squint, so he checked the bit under the drivers side carpet and said they had been changed and keep saying dot matrix.
Long story short the car was taken off me and he says its a ringer, if it has been stolen whats the chances of getting my suspension, exhaust and alloys back off it? And will I need to buy it back if it has been?
Cheers
Plus when it was going onto the flatbed he caught the tip of the exhaust and squashed it Can I claim?

If you got the car from a registered business, then you m-i-g-h-t have a recourse for compensation, but don't quote me on that....
I think it's solicitor time........

the police will have to identify it as a different vehicle,ie if it is a "ringer" they will have to establish the original id of the car it actually is,if they cannot identify it as being a particular car, other than what id is on it now, they will give you it back, may take some time though.

Ahem..... Now to the real reason for my post......... I once bought a car transporter trailer, from a small motor trade (whom I knew) and it turned out to be stolen !! The real owner spotted me using it,one day, when I was delivering a car to an auction.. Anyhow, said motor trader Had given me an official receipt. So,along comes plod and says ''We will be impounding that trailer'' . Oh,No you won't sez I !! Yes,we will, says increasingly annoyed plod......... What he didn't know, was that I'd been to my solicitor, before he arrived and had been told not to release trailer to ANYONE,even the police. ..... Mr Plod did NOT like this, but there was fook all he could do,as I had an official receipt.
In the end,the real owner had to 'buy it back' from me,as I was the 'Legal owner' . He wasn't too pleased though!!
Just shows......ALWAYS get a receipt for anything worth anything !!

Say he was wearing his seatbelt and he happened to have a crash,or worse knocked someone over. How would he have stood legally with it being a ringer. Might be a good thing you got pulled Scott, although i realize it dont seem that way right now.

the person he run over would not have any EXTRA injurys caused by it being a ringer unless the new floor numbers where REALLY stamped in deep
as said though unless they prove the cars ID theres nothing they can do mate, dvla may crush the car though

I'd thought that myself, ment to ask the police if my insureance would have been void if it had been found to be stolen after an accident.
Was about to put a 6 point cage in and coilovers, lucky I didnt lol

Similar thing happened to my dad a few years back.
He got a letter for speeding from a place he'd never been even.
Got intot he details of it and turned out his car had been used in a murder and the plate had been changed.
He had a receipt for buying the car in good faith and it all got sorted although he did have to change the plates (to what was supposed to be on the car)

if you have no Work Receipts or sale ones
you will get nothing back
but they may take your finger prints
to check behind the number plates ...
people fit them with out gloves on VERY SLOPPY

you may be asked WHY THEY ARE

if you can get the original sale from ebay you should be able to get your bits back
the bill of sale for the car though, thats the tricky one, if you've still got the recipt then you shold be fine, if you ain't they might have plenty of time on their hands taking bits to peices to work otu what is and isn't yours
as soeone mentinoed, if you do get it back you may have to Q plate it
my mate had the same thing ages ago when he bought a cavalier
went to the car auction, couldn't find what he wanted, guy by the door said "buy this, cheaper than in there, job jobbed" so he handed over £3k and off he went
when he came round to see me with his new car i said "but if it's a 1.8 why has it got a 1.6 engine in it? why is there no ignition lock? the numbers on the windows are different to the reg plate, etc etc"
2 weeks later dibble came and took the car and he got sod all
