Default JIM'S MISFIRE THREAD

ok, picked the car up after having fun with new cams

now, i'm not sure if its missing or not, here are my symptoms:

car sounds more "farty" under load
car feels down on power
car doesnt idle as smoothly, ive had to raise the idle
car smells
at 3.5kish i get a lot of vibration through the pedal (which i had before, but its a lot worse now)

now, does that sound like it might be running on 5? (remember its a v6 so you can lose a pot and not even notice )

or have i maybe got an exhaust blow thatsa complete cincidence. it does sound like it does when the exhaust blows, but its a lot quieter (altho when its blown before its been a 10-15cm hole on the manifold... lol)

pease help me, the ring is fast looming

tried doing the normal trick of holding the engine at 2kish and pulling off plugs to see if the engine note changes?

Yep, DEFFO missing (ie not an exhaust blow) you can hear the thing even at idle.

i think its running on 5.

BAR can take a look at it on friday morning, but i might try n whip the plugs on tonight

if you are lucky, when you took the cam covers of they don't reseal great and the oil runs into the spark plug hole.

which will cause a mis fire.

its happined to mine

just take plug out let the oil drain into the hole clean plug job done

or its fucked

just had her running at about 1500rpm

pulled the leads out 1 by 1

each one lowered the idle speed

so it must be firing on 6 then?

but it feels like its on 5 (and sounds like it to)

what on earth can cause that?

is it possible that one of my plugs is shagged? i've got a new set turning up tomorrow.

my AFR gauge is only on 1 bank, but that shows pretty much normal. should i take that to mean that theres nothing wrong with that bank?

depends on the profile of the cams. currently got a 290' inlet dyration with a 265' exhaust duration on a dohc turbo, lumpy till 2000 rpm but when on 1 bar of boost, by heck it shifts

Ok Jim the compression is OK? have you given the engine a bit of a kick to see if it clears?

if compresstion is ok the all valves are closing are they opening? yes is it still firing on all 6.

its down on power you say, to me if its firing there can only be too reasons for it. Cam timing out or valves not opening fully

I see what you mean Neil, But I am sure it would not cause such a change in engine note.

I fitted a cam once on a Nova and I am sure it was a tooth out. it was down on power and made the farty nose

compression is ok yes. 170-180 on all 6

its not just down to power (its as quick as a focus diesel now... lol) you can tell its not runing on 6, you can hear it and feel it.

neil, the mapping wouldnt have such a huge effect, theyre very mild cams. plus i've tried to trim it fuel/ignition either way, makes no difference.

lets speculate for a second, what if a cam lobe is shagged and a valve isnt opening FULLY, would that have such a huge effect? i cant see that beihg the case (all cams look visually ok and all valves go up n down)

ok, PROBLEM FOUND

plug holes are full of oil.

changed the plugs and it was MINT (and fappin quick!)

then a mile down the road its running shit again

hopefully its just full of oil still (we didnt let it drain out or clean it or nothing) and its not leaking, really cant be arsed to have to get the rocker covers re-fitted

the best way is to take the plugs out and let most drain into engine, then use a air line in the wholes, but don't make my mistake and not cover the whole with cloth. on the first one I did i squrted oil all over the engine bay

ok, clutch is sorted

but the misfire?

well, we took the rocker covers off to find no oil leaking into the plug holes, musta been just some left over from fitting.

anwyay, changed the rocker covers (and gaskets) anyway but we didnt have any sealant, but just hoped for the best

unfortunately the best wasnt good enuf, now 4,5,6 are FULL of oil

(agai, the misfire disapeared for a bit, but returned after about 10mins (when the got full of oil i assume!)

so, gotta take it off again tomorrow and re-fit looks like i wont make it to LPS

scruttocks!

clutch? mark_24v_wiring changed the rachet.

then we realised there still aint enuf swing on it, so thought maybe its the wrong clutch cable.

anyway, spaced it out about 1.5cm where it goes thru the bulkhead (with washers) and now it bites in the same place as a normal clutch! yet still has full travel to the floor. it changes gear MINT noow, better than its ever been before, EVER!

as for the rockers, i whipped em of thismorning and you can see why it went, it was too tight round the middle bolt, so its squeezed the gasket down at one side.

anyway, took em off, cleaned most of the oil out (let the rest run into the plug hole) then refitted with some red instant gasket from halfords (it was about 2 yers old so i hope it doesnt go off but its all i had in the shed, bought it for my XR4i but never used it) anyway its been sat now for about 45mins, im gonna give it till half 9 then take her for a run and see if its sealed!

mark, where from? and don't say barry as he hasn't got stock yet

anyway, lets see if its 3rd time lucky, had em off earlier, and gave the surfaces a REALLY good clean with some thinners etc so its a smooth clean surface, and slapped it back on with a fair ammount of sealant.

one problem tho, one of the bolts has snapped in the head i can HOPE it still seals, but its gonna need to come out i'm sure of it.

anyway, ill leave it to dry all afternoon n see what happens...

Glad it aint leaking no more jim

If its getting that hot dont that mean that its over fueling too much? Im sure i remember something from college ( hey it was 14 years ago!!) that if there is too much fuel then the exhaust gasses are heated lots????

Someone feel free to correct me on that
