I have a C-max 2.0 TDCI, which I bought new in January 2004.
I have had trouble with it since day 1. It had a lot of engine vibrations from 1750-2000 rpm. Twice has it gone to safe mode (check engine and max 50 km/h) while driving…… thank god there was nobody behind me, or they would have crashed into me for sure. It has been at the dealer 5 times in a year time, trying to resolve the problems. So far the dealer has changed the EGR-valve (I think it is) 3 times as that’s what the motor management says is faulty. Changed computer, software update’s the whole lot.
And it gets worse… The last software update resolved the vibration issues, but the car now smoked so badly, people driving behind me couldn’t read my number plate.
Fortunately for me, while the car was at the dealers, trying to cure the smoking problem, the car cut out, gave a ‘check engine’ and went to safe mode.
So the dealer gave me a new car (actually, it’s a company car which is leased, so I got a new car from the leasing company).
So I’m well chuffed, driving along in my new C-max 2.0 TDCI…… not.
Driving at a steady speed between 1750-2000 rpm is not a smooth ride at all, not as bad as my previous car, but not as it should be either.
So I did a search on the net for problems with this cars and I found quite a lot… the 1.6 and 2.0 tdci have lots of problems, similar to mine. And guess what, so do the Peug. 1.6 and 2.0 HDI 16…..
What is wrong with ford buying these crap French engines when they have a great 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 in the old focus and mondeo?????
Any of u have experience with these engines? Or is it just my bad luck, having two crap ones…
Sorry for the essay, but I had to get this off my chest.

The vibration problems can be cured by a new bottom pulley, tensioner
and accessory belt.
There is a ford tsb and your dealer should find it easily enough.
