Ok, i wrote to Natwest about my charges for both my current account and my credit card.
I received a letter back saying blah blah we believe our charges are fair, reasonable and transparent, and have been applied strictly in accordance with our agreement blah blah blah...
It then goes on to say:
"As an exceptional matter, on this occasion we will arrange to refund your account with £35.00 as a gesture of goodwill. However, our Terms & Conditions will continue to apply and any charges that accrue in the future must stand.
Acceptance by you of this payment will be in full and final settlement of all claims you have relating to our charges"
Now, i was claiming for £120.00 of charges on my current account, and £155 on my credit card. I have to write to them seperately at another address for the credit card bit though, oops!
So what shall i do? They have already put the £35 back in my account.... but i quite fancy pushing for more?

Right anyone other than PON trying with Royal Bank of Scotland???
My mrs got a letter today that basically says fuck off
Her charges are about £1500 and something back would be nice. At the end of the letter it just says we are disappointed you say you wish to take legal action against us but if you do serve the paperwork to the main address at bottom of page
what the bloody hell do we do now?!

yeah there is always that...
but if it goes to court, it will be made public and in the press etc...
which will alert a hell of a lot more people into doing the same thing with their bank, and be major bad news for all banks...
as loads of people will request their money back all at the same time
so i would think, they will have sense and want to keep it quiet and just settle out of court...
i cant help thinking they sent that letter to try and warn you off, hoping you would just go away....

Chopman - just read your posts.
Sounds like they're calling your bluff to me.
I would really rather not go to court, but I am preparing myself to do so. I guess you shouldn't say you're going to take them to court if you aren't prepared to do so?
Get yourself to www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk and see what you can find
Neil.

They won't want it to go to court, not at the moment. If it comes out that they've lost, and a tabloid gets hold of it, they know full well that all and sundry'll have a go.
I'll have twenty quid that you'll get a settlement offer before it hits court, it's recognised that they're legally in the wrong already from what I've read.

How the hell have some of you managed to rack up so many charges!!
Complaining to the bank and clawing some of the cash back is a good idea - but you can't really blame the banks for your own financial mis-management
Maybe some of you should try spending within your means?
Never had a bank charge in my life

having gone through six years of account for 4 accounts, it seems we haven't done too badly.
£190 odd was the worst one, so given that 60% of that is justifiable (ie £12 charge instead of £20) then not really worth claiming back.
I am however still wainting on a loan statement that I got hammered for nearly a grand in charges, that was from a different bank (Lloyds).
Shame I can't go back 10 years, as Barclays would get a right hammering. Fooking a'holes

well ive just read all 11 pages
I have just started the process to open another current account (need to as i have a job at that bank lined up anyway and they will only pay me in one of there own accounts )
and as soon as that account is open, im going to try my luck with the natwest, and I am more than willing to take it to court, as surely charging me 35 quid for going 63p over my limit is a bit extreme!
and then there was the time they refused a DD when i had the money in the account they refunded that one tho, as a sodding goodwill gesture - i mean goodwill, they shouldnt have refused the Bill as my account was in a positive figure(for the first time in a while) and had a large overdraft!!!
