I used to love all the VE discussions, stuff about TIP ratios and to a lesser extent, camshafts and their effects, you know, all that stuff, never been a real fan of "How to fit XYZ"

That way you can learn about stuff and apply it your own way, then learn more. Just following instructions on how to fit whatever only means you end up copying what someone else has done and learn little in the process.
We want to know HOW neons WORK, not HOW to FIT them

I think what people are sick of is the type of stuff you see in the boy racer and bling magazines. I just can't understand how magazines like Max Shit, have managed to keep selling, when something like Car and Car Conversions fail. It's just totally unbelievable.
I don't even consider magazines like "Max Shit" to be car enthusiast magazines, more like comics.
I think what we're after is a technical type magazine for those of us who already know how to wire neons to the chassis.... , what we're looking for is, how to improve VE, How to calculate CR, How to reduce ACT's..... We're not after all of your secrets, just logical and proven facts.
When I look for a magazine in somewhere like WH Smiths, All is see is magazines full of badly modified cars, cars that make you cringe..... and unfortunatly some of those features have been in some of our favorite mags.....PF and FF.
Now...... some months I browse through them on the shelves, and end up putting them back on the shelf and leaving them there. And what am I starting to actually buy......... Practical performance, Classic Fords, These are the only two mags at the moment where the editors seem to have any knowlege of technical issues..... All they seem to know is how to wire in a set of neons, and hang a pair of furry dice.......
Mank Over.....

Hate magazines here, seems aim to 14 year old kids mid shelf titty magazines. Who want to read a b c product and fitting guide? when buy most thing it come with a fitting instruction or helplines from manufacturer so why pay Ł5 for a magazine to tell you same thing?
I trust old engineering articles as they written by real professionals widely regarded best in the feild. Internet is better for discussing ideas but original idea always come from a book and people like me can learn with no confusion of other people interfeering. I like to learn more about how one thing is developed from theory rather than saying a GT25 turbo is better than GT38 for this car but otherway around for next car.
If i learnt the reasons behind it i could make judgement for my self and apply it to my own application and use internet to discuss further rather than rely on random guy personal thinking.
Regret i do not read much, i do not know where to begin reading with much poor quality information

Dont know if this is on the same track as this thread guys but when i did my apprenticeship i was told to buy (or borrow or steal) a copy of "the fundementals of motor vehicle technology" which i still have and read cover to cover a few times.
for how and why's its all in there to a great extent and covers from the basics to the more complicated stuff, a good read for beginners.
Its about an inch and a half thick though so a few beers and 60 cigarettes should do it.
Keeping my eyes peeled for FF on monday stu

Especially as i can steal all your ideas for the same sort of stuff i'll be doing for total vauxhall
Seriously though, there is NO ONE i know who has a better combination of knowledge/writing style than you, so I think simon has REALLY scored a good result by getting you on the team

Hi guys,
Not specifically Ford but check out Car Mechanics magazine. They regularly run articles heavily tech based on how things work, and run an excellent Engine Diagnostics and Help! section. They're not shy of tackling the modding scene either, with everything based on good technical and personal experience rather than what's just 'trendy' at the mo'. Their readership seems to be a bit older than average so plenty of experience to call on - and they run a pretty good forum (though nothing like Passion!).
Cheers

as mentioned before, i think thats what all the mags (bar ppc) are lacking
there is plenty of "fit this and you get this adavantage" but it doesn't tell you how those advantages are achived
put in a biger filter and you get more air in, and you can even have colder air, but other than saying "the more air youget the bigger the bang it will make" it doesn't exactly tell you what the extra air is going to be doing, where the gains are going to be found, how to adjust the fueling to compensate, etc etc, same for cams, fitting a wilder cam gives you more power, but why? what are the duration timings all about? what does overlap really mean in the real world? why do you need a vernier and how do you go about setting it up? when was the last time you hooked up a timing light to check your advance/retard settings on idle?
although i think soemone should really start with a "how to get rear beam bushes out of a sierra axle" guide
mind you, in saying all of the above, you need to spend more than 2 pages dealing with someof the stuff, the daves have been a few issues when talking baout how to rig up a flow bench and how to build your own efi took the best part of a year

stu, if you need anything to help you explain these subjects, just let me know, i teach both mechanical and bodywork, covering most aspects of engine management etc , so i have plenty of stuff available that is used for teaching all levels.
hey we could even do a test at the end, to see if people have actually learned anything!
