Default Turbo Shaft Questions

Reading on here over the last couple of weeks there's been discussion on Maram shafts etc...

I'm in the process of fitting a T34 to my cossie, and I thought I'd check to see if the shaft on my turbo is magnetic (which it isn't)

I also checked that of the factory T3 that I've taken off - it's also non-magnetic.

What different shaft materials are there, and why do people make a fuss about Maram ones being non-magnetic if they're all bloody non-magnetic?

you must check the whole of the turbine side not just the centre piece, the wheel should also be non magnetic. the mag/non mag bit is just a way of checking wether the shaft was made by mar-m. therefore being able to withstand alot higher temps than a std turbine.

Cheers Mark

I did check the wheels and the ends of the shaft on both units, they're both non-magnetic.

The T3 is the factory unit, and definitely won't have a posh shaft

pmsl at everyone who 'thought' they had a maram shaft or said they have..

when infact. . they havent!

Mine had MAR-M stamped on the end of the shaft AND an 'M' in a circle stamped on the exhaust wheel

I didn't "think" I had one at all - my turbo was a bit of an unknown quantity, all I KNOW is that it's a freshly built 0.63A/R T34 (i.e. brand new, never fitted), and it cost me £350 delivered

I was just curious, had a magnet on the bench at the same time as the turbos, so I checked

My thread was along the lines of "why make a fuss about mar-m shafts being non-magnetic, when they're all non-magnetic"

Neil.
