Default CVH experts help please!!!! (quick question)

Im building a CVH (n/a) at the moment and have noticed a 'quirk' I need you guys to tell me if this is normal or not.

Basically the main bearing shells do not seem to line up! looking down on the engine (sump side up, crank horizontal) the shells are mis aligned by about 2mm.

The crank moves freely despite this.

I have another CVH bottom end (looks like an earlier one) on which this doesnt happen when using the same shells.

Im told by the shop that got me the shells theres only 1 type for 1.6 CVH??

What the phuck? Is this normal?

Cheers

there are 2 types of shells for the cvh.

On one type, the earlt type, the shells have grooves all the way round. On the later type, there is only grooves in one of the shell halves. The block is matched to this. However, it doesn't matter, as long as the oil holes are aligned.

Thanks for your reply bud.

I think I have the wrong shells (early type for later block) As orginally I did have an early block, but mid build it was scrapped for a better late one.

Like I said the orgianl early block was fine with these same shells. It was just the fact the muppet I bought them off said there is only 1 type of shell for the CVH that made me wonder.

Cheers

most people think there is only 1 type of shell, i think they prob changed it when they changed the crank/pump.

The big end shells are the same but the main shells on early blocks have a casting problem and the main shells have a +.4 on some of them ( Makes them wider I believe??).

So the sizes are (say?) standard +.4 and 0.25 oversize +.4 and so on. This would explain why they would sit out of line.

I had this problem with one of my old engines and the shells from ford with +.4 were mega expensive.

Have a look on one of the old shells and see, it should state the size and +.4

Hope this helps.

Not all early blocks have the problem I described, just something you could check that was all. You could just simply have been given the wrong shells.

The early crank will be fine in an late block provided you have an early type oil pump to suit the crank.

Oh and the shells are the right ones...

crank and pump defo match, I was quite aware of that before purchacing

Still not sure where I stand as far as shells are concerned Just to recap:

--- Im pretty sure I have a late block.

--- The shells I have fitted my old block perfectly. This block was chucked due to cracked oil pressure switch hole.

---The same shells now sit wanky in the good (late?) block.

I think I will invest in the later shells (only one groved) and see if they sit better.

Thanks for your help gents, more gems of wisdom are welcom if anyone has any
