Default XR2 Buying tips ! what to look out for ?

Hello , Basically i'm seriously into looking at buying a F Reg Ford Fiesta XR2 (i presume this is Mk2 or something ?) It's covered 31k from new and is immaculate. 1 Lady owner

It's had a small patch welded somewhere (forgotten where - But done and documented by ford) and has a slight bit of scabby rott just under the front right headlight (It's where the wing joins part of the front panel i think)

there is a FSH from a ford garage near Macc, It's available for £1200 !

Now, i come from Nova's ( ) So this car is only going to be used as a run around whilst i'm at uni then i'l sell it on (Ive got a Nova with a 1.6T40 lump, so i'd prefer to keep that :-D ) What bits should i look out for ? any specific areas that rott ?e.t.c

Thanks Nick

- Along the sill pannels, particularly behind the plastics at the rear
- Inner edge of the doors at the bottom
- Edge of wheel arches, particularly where the rear arches meet the sill pannel
- Boot floor, around plastic drain plugs and in the corners
- Inner wings, especially up near the bulkhead and around suspension mounts
- Inner front edge of bonnet
- Battery tray
- Scuttle pannel, through the vents below the windscreen
- Chassis members under the floor pan, at the front near the pedal box

thanks ! will be a great help.

So, if everything is fine (i know the battery tray has a little bit of scab on it, but it's just some surface rust) how much should i be looking to pay ?

The condition is immaculate. It's not Concourse but it's 100% standard. FSH, every single bill and tax disk e.t.c Serviced regularly ?

If its already been welded and has rot I'd say its well overpriced at £1300!
Im sure the engine would purr nicely but personally I wouldnt pay half 1300 for it.

How much they're worth is a difficult thing to judge. If it's minty mint then its worth 1300 if your're willing to pay it. Personally if you're not going to keep it I wouldnt buy it with a view to making money on it. Like digital dragon said, most people who buy xr2's are tight arses who arent prepared to pay more than 400 quid for one.

well i doubt there are many without a little bit of rott somewhere.

Here's a piccy that shows it's kinda condition

It's basically immaculate throughout, all the carpets e.t.c are like factory condition.

You can see the very very very small blob of rust i was on about under the headlight.

I only need some rough guidance, after all i really don't have a clue how much it's worth.

But if a nova GSi/GTE came my way in this standard condition it'd be definetly worth £1200 - so it's hard for me to judge !

well, with good xr2s extremely hard to find, you pay whats its worth to you. thats the beauty of old fords now. you can ask over the book price and someone who really wants it will pay it as to search around for one in similar condition will cost extra in petrol etc.

someone will snap that up for that price even if u didnt

good luck if u get it. looks a great one

On face value it's got to be worth at least a bag of sand

Check all the places I suggested and if there is no rot in any of those and it's just the bit under the headlight then i'd say it's a very good car. But like I said earlier if you want it to buy and then sell on you might lose money on it because not many people are prepared to pay alot for xr2's even though good ones are very hard to find these days. It's going to be a gamble. For just over a grand you can have a fun little car which is brilliant to drive, with great fun handling and pretty reliable solid car. If you look after it and get and bits of rust you find sorted early then it will last a long time.

XR2's are great fun, and I guarantee that if you drive it you'll love it

cheers thanks !

Ahh i'm not sure i'm ready to love a ford lol ! The nova will do me for a while longer, its got at least twice the BHP from a 1.68v

But like you said it'l be a cheap and fun and reliable run-around, and i reckon i could make most of the money back !

Will post some good piccies up for you all to gawp at if i get it
