Default Belgian MOT horror

Wednesday 01-03-06 was the day that I had to go to the dreaded MOT because I absolutely want my car to be able to drive to the NBR with Easter.

What I feared, has become reality with the new stinking laws of 15-02-06 --> FORBIDDEN FOR TRAFFIC for the following reasons:

The condition of the roads was inhumane that morning; snow, snow, snow and even more snow while the car NEVER sees any winter at all. :bigcry:

While driving back from the MOT through the snow, it eventually took it's toll on the front spoiler/splitter combo:

So not only "forbidden for traffic" which simply means that I can not drive the car for whatever reason, but also my carbon splitter in a couple of pieces. :bigcry: :bigcry:

Why did the car fail it's MOT, you might ask.
Suspensions rubbers --> Powerflex polybushes
Front bumper --> not having 11cm groudn clearance
Gearstick --> 1-2-3-4-5-R missing
Brake discs --> drilled and grooved
Non original exhaust --> Mongoose 3" in stainless without cat
Airfilter --> K&N Group A airfilter
Non original steering wheel --> Momo 32cm steering wheel because of my long legs

I won't say a thing about the 2nd page because the first alinea is completely standard stuff !!! I will be making a phone call to the MOT station tomorrow to ask why I had to pay € 70,00 (SEVENTY EURO).

Even more funny is that some things on the 2nd page are ranked as A-B-C while those are things that are allowed and then they still print them on the 1st page with "failures which lead to a new MOT"
To cut a long story short --> I've got an unsafe car.

After some phoning about between my garage and the MOT station in Aalst where my car was first registered from Germany, my garage got the OK for everything bar the steering wheel and exhaust.

I can live with the steering wheel BUT the steering wheel that has been installed is E-approved according to my knowledge so they have to agree to that. Even though, it won't be a problem if I have to put the original back in as I still have that laying about.

The exhaust however is worse --> they DEMAND at the MOT that the car should be having the standard Ford exhaust with cats. So I asked my dealership to price me one --> € 2261,07 (+/_ £ 1500)
But what's the "funny" part of all this --> the cat part and the downpipe from the turbo are not available no more.

I also think that pre 1993 cars can run without a cat IF the CO is low enough (my car runs 0,30% CO on tickover which is low enough so I just need a piece of paper that the Mongoose is specificly designed for my car and I need to find the part of pre 1993 online on some Belgian Government site.

And to top it all up --> I found this nice puddle of oil on my car while putting it back in the garage. Could that be coming from my filler cap? And if so, how come???

Hope you get it sorted

Can you borrow an exhaust for the MOT? You could even ship one over from here and back, and still save lots of money...

Don't want to do that.
I've had my MOT with the car for over 5 years now and nothing major has been changed. I'll have to bend the laws to get it's MOT.

I do NOT, and I repeat, do NOT want to sort to replacing stuff for standard to get through the MOT.

Thanks m8, really appreciate that but allready been offered the same from a m8 over here who is willing to lend me a completely standard exhaust but as said --> the exhaust is NOT available no more from Ford and I should be able to get me a replacement exhaust which is good enough (ie my Mongoose).

After all, should we just burn our cars because there is no exhaust available from Ford??? I think NOT.

thats a right shitter that is mate
ok, somewhere there is a bit of info about cars built before august 1993 not having to be fitted with cats

so, if you can say that your engine is a pre august 93 engine you won't have to fit the cats to it

but you are in a bit of a grey area because as far as i know it only applies to uk cars

if you drive a 94 car then thats a moot point (i can't see the pics so i don't know what it is)

Not a bad idea !! Everyone in Europe now is becoming EU wide - currency, weights and measures, passports etc..........I don't think it will happen tomorrow but eventually I'm sure there will be a European MOT of some kind or at least regulations that govern it. Look at the Swiss !!!

That would outlaw alot of modified cars, ones that differ from the manufacturers specification. Old Bill would love it as no more modified cars they couldn't catch, the tuning industry would be slaughtered........

I hope it won't happen but I think it's inevitable to some degree in the future.

Ah yeah, but the Swiss are always odd balls

Agree it will be getting tougher, though i hope they will just get tougher for new cars and be leaner on older cars with emissions etc. Dunno will see how it goes i suppose

I feel sorry for you Geert. Im shure some MOT stations are run by the Devil.

Not any problems here in Sweden with improvements that makes the car safer ie better handling and brakes. So mostly its about getting it to pass the emission test.

my bad,

but what does this mean then?

"For emission purposes vehicles are tested against details shown on the VIN and not the registration plate. Vehicles fitted with a different engine are tested according to which is older, engine or vehicle.

Catalytic convertors were introduced from 1st August 1992 and are compulsory after 1st August 1995. Vehicles first used between 01/08/92 and 31/07/95 are only cat tested if there is an exact match (re engine code) in the analyser database or in the Inservice Emissions book. Vehicles first used on or after 01/08/95 are cat tested using vehicle specific limits if there is an exact match. If there is no exact match it is cat tested using default limits, CO<=0.3%, HC<=200ppm"

does this mean there are 2 different cat tests?
if there are, then geert should be able to get away with a little bit shurely

mind you, these are the uk listings, but if they are the same across the whole of europe, they should be the same for every country yes?

Machtige cossie trouwens, had ik me just zen focus niet gekocht dan had ik hem waarschijnlijk aangeschaft.
greets michael audenaert.

From my experience with this.... if you have for example a 93/94 car but have had another engine put in it with a build date pre 1st August '92 - the MoT/emissions test will be based on the engine manufactured date.

I had a 130psi Mk V XR3i, the registration date was October 1992, so in reality if that date was taken, it would need a cat to get through the MoT.

I got someone to do a trace for me on the car and it transpired that the chassis was built in Feb 1992 and the engine in Dec 1991, so I didn't need a cat to get through the MoT. IIRC there was also something that the chassis/engine had to have been manufactured at least 6 months before 1st August 1992 to qualify.

I have always being under the impression that the law brought out on 1/8/92 was an EU Directive, so doesn't that cover all of the EU?

pretty much it... the test is done on whatever is the older - engine or car. hence why in my mk2 escort the zetec only needs to meet 1980 emissions regs... hence why i can run dirty big carbs rather than forking out on throttle bodies etc. by the same token you could stick my old crossflow that was fitted in my escort into a modern mondeo (god only knows why though!) and it would be emissions tested according to the engine's age, not the cars.

Well thats MOT

How do you get on for insurance ?

I know in some European countries you cant modify the car at all, and if you do you cant get it insured so you have to drive at your risk.

The world has gone mad !

But as has been said on this post....

It will be coming here very soon luckily the modified car scene in this country is sooo big that it would political suicide for any party to try and front up the modified car owner... so I suspect it will be done by stealth over a period of time.
