Default How do I get unleaded fuel out of a diesel tank??!! *update*

Yeah yeah i know im a complete bellend! Went to the petrol station just now to stick some diesel in the van after it being off the road for a week. I put about £8 worth of unleaded in before realising what i was doing! (been using the missus' car so used to using unleaded!).

How do I go about getting the diesel out? I havent started the car or even turned the ignition on so hopefully none has got to the front. (petrol station top of the road and got towed home!).

Van is an Astra Diesel 1.7dti (W reg).

Any advice would be great!

Cheers
Chris

Ran - I suppose I could do that but it would mean taking the tank out? Too dark to see where the lowest point of the tank is at the mo

Slipside - I dont really want to risk that mate as there are about 2 gallons of petrol in there!!

Do as slip says fill it up there is less than 2 gallons there it will dilute it with the diesel and wont harm the pump or injectors in any way trust me I see this daily in the recovery trade

If you want to do it properly though. You'll have to pump it out of the tank.

Whether that involves removing the sender unit and manually syphoning, or removing the feed pipe to the engine, running it to a bucket and then cranking it for 20 minutes is up to you

Chris honestly my way will be your best bet id not advise someone in this feild if I had the slightest inclination that it would fook your car !!!
You have less than 2 gallon in the tank fill it up and it will be fine mate the time you start having problems with pumps etc is when you fill the tank with petrol and drive it till it stops diesel is oil based as you well know this aids in lubrication of the bearings and internals in the pump petrol washes the lubrication away but such a small amount will not harm it ! .

Doug is spot on,.

Ive done it before and was advised just to dilute it by filling the tank with diesel.
I couldnt be arsed with draining it, and just listened to the chaps advise and all was well.

You may get away with topping the tank up, but don't be tempted to try that in a more modern diesel engine because petrol in those does serios damage really quickly.

Personally I'd rather undo the main hose from the tank and drain it that way.

*update*! Well me mate came over and found a fuel line he easily unclipped (without even jacking it up!). Siphoned (sp) about 5 litres of petrol/diesel out of it. I then had it towed to the petrol station and brimmed the tank with diesel this time ( ). Stuck about £40 in and all was good, she starts and ive driven about 2 miles without a problem!!!

Cheers guys for all your help!

Chris
