if you work north sea then you pay tax whatever happens. You usually work a regular rotation of same weeks away to same weeks home.
Sometimes if you work abroad you might work 6weeks abroad then 4 home or the like. you still pay tax working abroad.
i believe you have to be out of the country for something like 9months to qualify for not paying tax. dont hold me to that but ive spoken to guys offshore who have done it. If their rotation abroad means they will be home for more than the allowed limit to be in this country they instead go on hols somewhere else on their time off.
thats the ONLY real way to get round full tax.
You could have your own company and work as a consultant and then you can pay something silly like only 10% tax total because of how you pay yourself and business partners(ie wife) etc. I dont know much at all about this really. But to be a consultant you already need to be established in your field and then the work may not be regular because you work through an agency.
tax for anything over 40k is standard 40% isn't it?
anymore Q's then ask but nothing too technical

40% on anthying over Ł37480, i got a letter the other week.
Like chop says best way to go is either work abroad, or go consulting, set yourself up as a limited compay and pay yourself the minimum wage, plus dividends, to reduce your tax, i don't do this but i'm thinking about it.

I currently work offshore but in a different field and pay zero tax
or 15% on the interest on my savings which aint much,
I asked as i am thinking about changing jobs i have also been told that the 9 months thing is now 6 months would be worth checking into as you could be losing money.
Thanks for the info,
Oh what do you guys do offshore ?
Cheers Mike

what do you do then? work on a boat? zero tax is nice!
what would you like to do? something on the rigs?
not sure that 9months would lower to 6 like because most people in north sea do 2 on 2 off so thats a lot of tax not being paid!
Im a Drilling Fluids(Mud) Engineer.
