and if so what state do they get in ?. in 1 full session dry .
Worn out can't drive home ?
heavily worn need tyres imminently ?
No immediatlely obvious tread reduction ?

i have used my current rears for 3 years and the fronts have done 5 track days .. rears are fine and the fronts are now very unhappy they are a bit worn on the outer edges and lack grip when they get hot
just look and see

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
When Porkie had his Corsa we must have done 10 track days on one set of road tyres.
But the Sierra has eaten an outside front in a few sessions at the Combe...

I use my road tyres. Each time I come off (not across the grass ) I check the condition. If in doubt I call it quits. I also only do runs of about 5 laps at a time to try and ensure the tyres don't over heat

That could be down to temperature too Rick
A question posted in February (cold track), and Ford Fair is held in August - hot(ter) track. Cant really compare.
Some people REALLY dont understand the basic principals. Had that question been posted in August my answer may have been different

I found that on new full tread Goodyear Eagle F1's they overheated within 10 laps and you get rubber crumb melt and then move and cool down on the surface of the tyres making them slippery on track
The next time i did a track day the temp was some 10 ºc cooler on track surface and i had less than half the tread depth than previously and the tyres held on much better with much less melted rubber crumb on the surface of the tyres.
The last time i did track day with these tyres they were 3/4 worn and the temp was only 4 ºc on track surface and i had hardly any molten rubber crumb and the grip was really good.
This all with a FWD RST being pushed hard throught the corners and hard on the brakes.
So about 3/4 worn decent tyres and on a cold track surface is the best option for a track day IMO

Thanks AndyRST now were finally getting somewhere
When people start thinking about tyre conditions, track temperature and even god forbid tyre pressures then we are onto a winner.
Way before all that tho' is the bit about people having fun, learning to drive on track safely, and exploring and experimenting with their cars in a safe and legal way.
Can just see the summer PM's now changing to
"hello mate, I have a brand new set of mitcheloptoyocontigoodnentalyears with 7mm tread, will it be safe for me to go out on track with them as the weather is 28.4 degrees and im planning on doing 2 sessions in the morning at 25 psi"
People just want to learn to have a good days fun first before all this bollx. I'd say only after you have done a good few track days in all conditions will you actually notice ANY difference, and only do so then if you are reaching the limits of what you have.

Something else i thought i would add that i have seen so far. IMO a road tyre with full tread or over half the tread left, creates more tyre temp than a tyres thats 3/4 worn or nearly down to the legal limit.
The reason i think it does this is the road tyre tread patten effectly cuts the tyres contact surface into blocks, these blocks move around ALOT more on track than they ever will on the road. This movement of the treaded blocks creates heat and its this heat that helps the rubber to become soft. Then add the extra g force of acceleraton, cornering and braking to the already softer rubber of your tyres and the tread starts to peel off into little bits of rubber crumb, as they do they cool down again and restick to the surface of the tyre and into the water channels of the trye tread. So with less tread depth the tyre wont get so hot and wont peel the rubber away so much therefore the tyres wont feel as slippery on track IMO
So IMO on a dry track less tread gives you more grip, but the police/goverment always try to hammer it into people that more tread equals more grip ................... but i find not in this case lol
Has anyone else seen/experianced it like this ?

AndyRST - you're spot on - Racers have been using buffed and more recently shaved tyres for years. This is minimise tread squirm and reduce heat build up in the tyre carcass. Excessive heat is the #1 enemy for a tyre.
A new tyre treated this way will often last longer than one which has not been treated - whilst also giving better grip and more stability.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I did 3 sessions at Trax last year, all about 20 mins long, in the Peugeot 206 deisel i had at the time
Taking it fairly easy ish on a the track as i hav'nt dont that many session in the past
Front 2 tyres were Pirelli P7000's, under a 1000 miles on them before going on the track.
After my last session they were fucked
The outer 2 inches or so of the tyres were totally bald
Also as above, its deff true that brand new tyres wear MUCH quicker on track days then a tyre thats say 1/2 worn at the start of a session (going from the track days i've done myself, if fairly lowish powered FWD cars)

This is a picture of my Fronts on my RST after Croft Last Year [was a hot day]. They started off as on the limit legally part-worns. The inner edges were pretty much shafted after a FULL day of hard driving
The rears didn't show much wear at all.
