Default power steering

if a car has power steering, how easy is it to remove?

is it as easy as losing the belt, removing the pump and presumably blocking a pipe/hole or two?

i once had to help push a car when the engine had died, and it took two of us to steer it (mondeo) as power steering obviously dead as well

so you wanna remove cos of the chance it might break? thats like saying you wanna remove the exhaust cos your worried it might break and be loud for a bit of time until you get it fixxed!

but in answer to your question, no, p/s and manaul racks work very differently, you'll need to get a manual rack fitted to your car.

you would have to put a manual rack in depending if you can get one for that car

as if you removed the powersteering it would be like the mondeo as you described

no! a few of us are getting together to build a track car, initially an mk4 xr3i. but been offered an rs1800i, but has PAS. we'd all prefer non-PAS, and save a bit of weight. only used the mondeo incident as an example!

i posted about losing a brake servo a while ago, to the same effect...

make it raw!

but thanks for answers. nothings easy is it.

edit: would i be right in saying early rs1800i had no PAS? and i assume a FRST rack would fit?

thanks again

was going to be 3i, but we haven't bought one yet, then offered rs1800i.

but if we buy the 1800i, we don't want PAS.

i'm pretty sure i read somewhere early rs1800is don't have PAS

Thats right - early 1800's don't have PAS, so you should be able to get all the bits from them.
