Default Ebay question to me re: my engine - was it you?

My old complete 330 engine is on Ebay at the moment (no this is not an ad....).

Just got a question emailed to me, and it's so ridiculous, I want to know if it's someone off the board.

"hi, i am interested but can i pull the head off then if its wat i want i will have it. yey or ney. cheers"

Basically, the guy wants to come down, remove the head, and THEN see if it's what he wants with the possibility of not buying it....

Is there an abundance of crack smokers working the ebay rounds at the moment or something?

sounds fair in principle...

tell him nonrefundable deposit of couple hundred to fund the work/parts.

without the head off it 'could' be fooked - buying it totally on your word if it isn't in the car running?

I'd go with this Rich...

IF it hasn't been run it aint gonna need a skim so if he gives you enough money as a deposit to cover the costs of a new head gasket and some head bolts then I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world.

As for just removing it on spec- FUCK RIGHT OFF

I would assume if the head was taken off and didnt reveal detonation and find the head below its recommended skim level you would sell this engine to that buyer no problems.Shows a serious buyer to me who is trying not to get ripped off.(no its not me asking either!)

it could be a quite reasonable request if he does not know you. ask him what he expects to see!

Are you boys off your rocker?

I'm not taking the head off with a Group A headgasket, brand new rocker and half moon seals fitted, and then going to the trouble of putting it all back together myself all for someone who admittedly "might" not want it!

My reply was suitably sarcastic

Are you sure he meant pull the head off the motor?
Maybe he likes pulling his head off in front of strangers.

rich, why be sarcastic? you could loose a sale... i would tell him that if he pays for the gaskets... off the head comes! i would expect to see inside an engine if i was buying.

Cam - maybe. We haven't seen Deano in a while - could be him!

Martin - taking the head off shouldn't be a problem apart from the fact that I don't have a single second of "spare" time at the moment.

Then if he doesn't want the engine for any frivolous reason, I'm now left with an engine to put back together - I've never done a headgasket (I know it's not difficult), and again I don't have the time. I also could do something wrong which would lead to the next purchaser complaing that the headgasket leaks etc

As the engine stands now, Harvey did a top job x amount of years ago, and I don't want to tempt fate by getting involved. On a serious note, would most people expect to see inside a secondhand engine when buying one they can't hear run in a car?

As for the sarcasm, I was suitably pissed when I replied

Yes Rich, its exactly why I refused to break ANYTHING off my Dads Tomcat untill the engine sold- as it needed to be heard running to get the maximum money from it and also its quite a chunk of the car.

Each to their own though I know there are plenty of people out there who are not as cautious etc

Someone else will buy it Rich so don't worry about losing this geezer.
Sounds like a nice package and at a fair price imo for what comes with it!

I wouldn't buy it without taking the head and sump off! Seems a fair request in my book.

IMO it will still sell regardless of whether the head is on or not, just edit the listing to say 'head removed for buyer inspection'

if it were me and i was serious about buying it i'd like to see inside and wouldn't be at all bothered about the cost of new gaskets/bolts if it meant i could buy with more piece of mind

I dont think its unreasonable at all to expect the head to be removed for inspection unless it can be heard running

thats a cheep price tbh,,,, cant fault it at that price for what you get

BUT i can see the reason,,,,,,, hell i bought a engine off cossie crew blind and never heard ot tested,,,,,,,,,, but then i also paid ALOT less than that and was bought for the bottom end only and i changed all the gaskets/lifters.cams ect

but 1500 quid is too tempting a price to refuse for someone that needs a decent engine

Had the sump off and have pictures from underneath from only a few weeks ago.....

Didn't realise that was the score re: removing the head, but fair enough... I'm sure it'll go without, but you live and learn.

pon i think that is for big power engines mate im sure,,,,,, MOST people for that price wont wanna buy a engine AND THEN refit it all again,,,,,, maybe thats just how i looked at it

i paied 800 for my engine with the intention of removing it all as it was a gamble,,,,, for 1500 i dont think i would wanna, would wanna just fit and forget ,,,,,,,, how strange does that sound
