2wd 4 pots won't fit straight on unfortunately, you would need a set of cossie hubs and TCA's

easiest thing is to get a set of cossie 4x4 calipers and use a 2wd disc as this is astraight swap

I think the cossie items will fit the XR4x4, its just the XR4i which is odd (because I bought one).

xr4x4 IS different...

the calipers will foul the bottom ball joint on the hub... this can be overcome by removing some material from the joint...

my mate has a websit with the details on it but i cant remember the address... lol mail him:

stu_xr4x4@hotmail.com

he may have all the bits available to make it bolt on aswell...

Now let's see... one of the most stressed points on my suspension is in the way - what can I do? I know, lets grind it away!

2wd (cos) front brake setup, 4x4 (cos) rear brake setup...

v. cheap and it will all fit (with a tiny bit of fetling)

failing that just stick to std size brakes+calipers and use decent discs + pads

the std brakes on the XR4x4 are more than man enuf for the job they were meant for... i'm running a XR4x4 brake seup on mine (ie rear discs) and they will stop the car from 120mph VERY fookin fast.

and re my earlier comment, i meant that fitting those parts will be a complete waste of money on an XR4x4

So you still recommend grinding the triangle strengthners off the track rod ends, rather you than me mate

Personnaly I found the 4x4 cos set works a hole lot better than the xr set up and bolts straight on with out risking a tre failure

Each to their own I spose

yes Chris but you need to swap the hubs too, i did think you could get away with the xr driveshafts though, seeing as alot of the 4x4 cossie boys fit em to there cossies coz there longer ?

re fitting the 4 pots to the 4x4, personaly i would risk grinding the TRE but if you are willing to do this they do fit

the 4x4 caliper/2wd conversion i mentioned only works on the 2wd

I fitted the cos 4x4 hubs shafts calipers etc to mine as I didn't want to space out the calipers if I used the XR hubs

piccy

http://www.wiltshire-computing.co.uk....php?pic_id=79

PS

I couldn't get the XR shafts to fit with the cos hubs though when it was all bolted the cv wouldn'd turn left or right because it was compressed due to the 4mm longer shaft

all4it standard brakes are MORE than adequate for a standard car they really are VERY good on the XR4x4 especially considering the speed+acceleration of the thing. theyre very over-engineered you'd be surprised at how well these things stop as standard! i can lock the front wheels on mine at 100mph quite easily, and the tyres aint cheap naffy ones either

as for point 2 whilst i do agree with you... it's be a bit silly to fit 8 pot watercooled WRC brakes with 355mm discs toa 1.1 pop plus fiesta :P

as for the grinding of the TRE i'll say again i havent done this nor am i reccomending it, i'm just giving you all the facts that it is possible and many people have done it before with success... the actual ammount of metal that needs removing is TINY, were taking about 1mm worth, if that (as it only rubs a TINY ammount... after the disks have about 100miles worth of wear on them it wont catch anymore its that much of a tiny ammount. now whilst i'm not a structural engineer i personally dont see it being a problem as the thing's got more than enuf meat on it and it not under extreme stress... but like i said i cant back that up with techy physics stuff

as for spacing out the calipers to use the 280mm discs, ive heard that this actually provides % more braking power than moving to the 4x4 cos calipers... but thats just word of mouth n i cant back that up with any proof etc.

PGT (and others) doesn't think so or he wouldn't be asking about an upgrade

why pick holes?

when i say dont reccomend i dont mean that in the sense of i think its bad, just mean i'm not going out of my way to say its something i thinks a good idea... i'm neutral on the subject, just pointing out all the possible options.

and the std brakes comment was intended for all4it and not a recomendation to the thread starter saying "leave it standard"

Jim, I think it is just that if none of us had said anything, from reading your first post only, this guy is going away thinking you have recommended grinding it off.

no theres a difference between willingness to do something to you own car and telling people to do things to theirs...

i make a point of not making suggestions/reccomendations which could cause others damage as i do not wish to be liable for anyones cockups other than my own

we must have different opinons on what good brakes and bad brakes are then...

altho to be fair ive never driven a car with PROPER brakes so dont have much of a frame of reference

the above was an answer to the questions of "will 2wd calipers fit an XR4x4" the answer is of course "yes - if you removes some metal from the joint" and also makes reference that more information is needed that i posess so ive given an email adress of someone who has such information and is in a better position to advise than i am i think thats probably the best answer i could have possibly given to that question... saying everything i do know then giving somone a contact for someone who posesses even more knowledge than my good self i really dont see a flaw in it

I actually think there's a lot of variation on peoples estimations of brakes on the XR, some people seem to think they're pretty good, others dislike them.

Personally, coming from owning Capris most of the time before the Xr4x4, I think they are pretty good in standard form.

As far as the original post goes about improving the braking, i'd guess that the dax rush is a fair bit lighter than the xr, and possibly just aftermarket brkae disks would be the cheapest solution, but i'd agree with Doh and swap the hubs over as then any cossie combination is then possible
