a work mate of mine has just traded a coupe version of a t5 for a new focus, they had the car from new,and had lots of problems with the engine management, and the control sensors. the last fault with the throttle cost nearly 4k to fix.thats why it was part exchanged.

Iv'e had a 850R for the last 2 yrs & its just turned 140k but has full volvo main dealer history from new with 2 owners . Mine has been very reliable, the aircon stopped working last summer but i haven't bothered having it looked at,apart from that its been 100%. Most T5R's will be very high mileage but that not a problem if it has been serviced correctly, one of the guys in the T5 club has one that is pushing just over 300 bhp & is on 205,000 miles at the last count & the engine has never been apart. If you want to put big brakes up the power, sort the suspension their is loads of stuff available, eg six pot calipers & 335mm front discs go straight on under original wheels Ł1200 ish from volvo parts for you.com.
Can't tell you what goes wrong with them as mines never gone wrong ! All i can say is they are very comfortable, fast enough & loads of room, very safe to,perfect car for cheap money.
here's mine
Poor pic's sorry !

I wonder where mine is now
Just short of 200,000 miles on it before I killed it towing the trailer at xxx+ mph
That was 300+bhp too, and overboosted like mad.
One thing you wont need to check for is a siezed fuel filler cap, mine would come off 3 times a day on a trip to London and back

I have a mate in the garage at SY Police and in 10 yrs of running T5's they have had no head gasket failures, whereas when they had Saff Cozzys in the early 90's they went through engines every 10000miles on average at Ł5000 a time.

Go ahead & by a 850R or the earlier T5R they are a very very good car for the money, buy wisely, i wouldn't touch one unless its got fvsh bang up to date. Most of them are low owner cars but high mileage as people tend to hang on to them. The amount of stuff iv'e had in the back of my 850R estate is unreal they have a lot of space & are a really good workhorse. Went to the south of France last summer about 1500 miles round trip & most of the time i sat @ 100-120 mph on cruise down through France. Its the best all round car iv'e had, yeah great i had a M3 E36 for 3yrs before the Volvo but you can't get fook all in a M3 & their noisier on the motorway. GET YOURSELF A 850R Still got my 3dr for playtime/trackdays

Bought one
Not a minter but didnt want anything too good for work, sticking bags of sand, cement, bricks etc in
Nice cheap accident repaired 850R,has been rebuilt properly and the owner had obviously looked after it.
Ive drove a few cars over the past few years and this has to rate as the best all round one of the lot
