Default External Wastegate help

Just wondering excactly what they do?

and do you still have an actuator fitted?

does it need a special pipe fabricated?

cost?

worth it?

Ive seen alot of the high power cossies in performance ford have them and i was just after some info,

much appreciated

What do they do? They leak air, so its bled away from the turbo and not used to spin the turbo, in order to maintain pressure at a predetermined level

The actuator is basically a part of it, its still there but you cant really see it as a seperate part.

Yes it needs special pipework, both to it from the exhaust manifold and from it back into the exhaust or straight to atmosphere (called a screamer pipe)

cost? well the wastegate itself is about 300 for a decent one if you shop around, the pipework cost depends on who does it, but at least that much again typically

worth it? on what engine?

Wether it "chatters" or not is an inlet thing its nothing really to do with the wastegate as such (well other than if the wastegate allowed no boost you wouldnt get it).

you wont see any real benefit on your car from a screamer pipe, a T3 on a YB just doenst need external control, well unless maybe you were going to run a LOT of nitrous or something like that.

Not worth it unless you are going to go for ALOT more power mate.

He is a pic of mine. You can see it. You also need manifold modded or a new suitable tubular manifold.

You can get internal gated GT30's capable of over 500bhp so just no need in my opinion unless you are going huge power or have big budget.

T34 is a 380bhp turbo (ISH!)
GT35 is a 600bhp turbo (ISH!)

On the GT35 you have to go external as no internal gate is availabe as far as im aware, my mini turbo is certainly external only and thats a relatively baby spec GT35R for example

Ah, ok thats made the turbo choice easy too then!

Im not lookin to make a record breakin saff, i just work on it with my dad and would like to build a nice boostin rwd road car

With that in mind now, all i really need to do is get a t34, and some engine bay dress bits, and brakes, suspesion and get the exterior "reconed"

cheers again

sounds like it will end up a good halthy stage 3 spec then.

DONT use a chip to tune it if you really want to get the best from it, get it live mapped by Stu or Karl, the difference is absolutely massive compared to an off the shelf chip IMHO!

Live mapping info:

https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=93911

Basically its the ONLY way to guarentee your engines fuelling and timing requirements are perfectly met, any "off the shelf chip" has to have massive safety margins built into it to allow for the widely ranging spec of "standard engines" due to things like head skims and subtle differences in cam timing etc.

your car will be driven on the road with various equipment attached to monitor sensors etc, and whoever maps it will constantly adjust the settings in the map, whether it be fuel, ignition etc .

you'll end up with a chip written to your exact spec, and how your car behaves on the road,

so you'll have better economy and much better driveability aswell as of course better performance

well worth it as chip said

You cant get this done very many places at all, its an extremely specialised technique.

all the average rolling road will do is chuck an off the shelf chip in your car and make sure its running safely, it will NOT be comparable.

i cant comment on the cost on behalf of other people, why not drop Karl a PM and ask him

Sorry. 20 quid = cost of joining up as a full member to view that forum.

Username "Karl" = Karl Norris, who owns norris motorsport.

do a search on "karl" or "nms" for people on here's experience with him.

Stu too is this some sort of strong correlation between being a legendary mapper of cossies and being a crap dancer?

If so, im glad im mapping my own engine as im defintely MORE than qualfied to do so on the bad dance scale
