Piranhas.....
Has anyone ever kept em as a pet?
Ive got a spare tank sitting here and quite fancy something a little different! Are Pyranas much agg to look after? I obviously wont be putting my hand in there or anything . Are they the same as looking after tropical fish??
Any advice would be most helpful!

I quite fancy this too. Will have to be some point in the future though as not got the space just now to set up my 3ft tank
I like the red bellied ones. Am I right in thinking they're mouth brooders?

Blimey an 8" plec might be a bit too long for my tank! My one is only about 3" long!! . The barbs will be ok in mine as ive got a fair few tiger ones in there already!
What shape tank is it as I may be interested if Dal doesnt want it!

If you could that would be excellent! Any idea what sort of size it is roughly? I was literally about to build a new cabinet for my current one but will hold out!!!

I had a red-bellied piranha for 12yrs it passed away recently after becoming ill due to old age! It never tried to bite me or anything but did crack two tanks and eat anything I put in there including rubber plants.
Theres a piranha forum here www.piranha-fury.com

LOL @ dead goldfish!! Might aswell put some ham in there! The chase is half the fun!! My mates got 6 red bellies in a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft tank, feeds them 6 LIVE goldfish every 3-4 days! At present they are approx half the size of a dinner plate, and anyone of them can eat a 6 inch long gold fish in 2 bites!! A fish once lived in the tank for 24 hours and we thought it was gonna stay, but as we discussed it they ate it!
Personally, ive found these by far the most interesting fish to keep/watch, very intelligent, regimental, organised, efficient! Absolutely stunning creature!

Do you not find it cruel to put the live goldfish in there?
I would be very reluctant to feed a piranha any kind of goldfish to be honest, dead or arlive, as they are often riddled with disease and filth. Absolutely filthy creatures.

I dont see much wrong with it to be honest, they would eat live fish in the wild! I can see why people wouldnt approve of this, but it doenst bother me! Ive seen people feed mice/rats to pirahna, now thats wrong!

not read any othe posts but i had 5 red belly piranhas in a tank which soon went down to 4
used to love feeding em goldfish and guppies and staring at the tank all monged waiting for the piranhas to get their kill
eventually they started to eat each other and the numbers started to drop.
gave em away to my mate and there were only 2 left by then.

Surely there only gonna turn cannibalistic if they arent fed enough... My mates go for eachother, but only one of them has been seriously injured, and he lost an eye! Ever since they get on fine!

Cool cheers for that guys! Id probably only be getting a couple as the tank ive got is relatively small.
Do I presume they live in the same type of climate waters as tropical?
Also whats the difference between them and Japanese Fighting Fish??!!

Only messing mate. Fighters are relatively small and aren't really that hard Other aggressive fi8sh rip them to shreds.
A piranha would think it was christmas if you put one in with him, all those pretty fins fluttering about....
I've actually bred fighters. I think they're superb.

Piranha's are awesome fish.
They eat to survive, simple as, and will eat virtually anything when hungry.
I did have 5, but the cannibal instict shot that down to 3, they lived on live fish, bacon, chicken, pizza the lot.
A healthy Piranha has a glowing red belly (hence the name) and a kinda glittery body,
Plus they are lazy bastards unless they feel a touch peckish.
The bonus is they are a very hardy fish, piece of piss to keep and maintain, very very rare do they suffer from disease due to crap water or owt so holidays wont be a problem for you (apart from the feeding)

the fish ARE natural predators, the goldfish die at some point, why does it matter what killed them? tarantulas and snakes are fed with live animals too! as thats what nature intended!
