Default Garage Improvements

Recently moved into a house with its own detached double garage. My only real stipulation for the new house was that it must have a double garage with one big garage door, to allow one car in the middle with room to work round it.

This house was one of only a couple that met all my wife's stipulations, so a deal was done and we bought the house on the proviso that I could put one big door in, as the garage had 2 single doors:

so that won't do, so one big steel lintel required, thanks again to AJC for the Steel supply, lets get it fitted:

once that was all in, new garage door time:

and the end result is the car in the middle:

thanks for looking

I'd love a garage that big, but at least ive got a single garage, so should be grateful for that!!
Never saw the point of double garages with two separate doors!?

Looks much better, far more use. My door was done like that and I wished they had made it flush with the pillars as you lose a good 10 inches.

Nice work!!

I've been thinking of doing that to mine and fitting a single electric double door.

But as the other half and I both keep our cars in the garage, I don't know if it would do any good?

We used an electric double, we went for an insulated one to add strength over the big span, it is over 1 inch thick. I wince every time I see a poor driver reverse near it as it was over Ł3000! I think they can cheaper but our opening is just over 5 meters, I don't remember but there is a critical size where they get flimsy. Ours was made by Horman.

that door is 5050mm wide, insulated panels and is plenty sturdy enough!

Dal, sounds perfect to me, we have 2 remote fobs that operate the door, so one for you one for her,

saves getting out of the car to open the door!

I think insulated is the only option at the big width. I like the slats.

Looks really good that! I'm looking forward to buying my next garage, the wife says it must have one of those house things with it too for her to live in!

the drive unit is on the left as you look from outside, quite neat on the wall.

Rich, yes those pesky houses get in the way really dont they

5050mm looks a very good sized door, i read some where on the net that a standard double 14ft or 4267mm door isnt wide enough to take 2 standard cars side by side these days. Another 750mm doesnt sound a lot in the scale of things but i bet it makes a massive difference. Ive just ordered my new door at 14ft 6" or 4420mm hoping its ample enough.

Whats the depth of your garage? Did putting the door on the inside of brickwork make much difference ?

the depth is just over 5m as well, its pretty square. The existing garage doors sat on the inside of the brickwork, so it has kept that aspect the same.

thanks,

Nice garage that! I'd love an indoor space to work on cars.
