wheres the best place to get welding gas eithe rstraight co2 or agon mix
what do you suggest as im new to it.

Well The only place we use to get Car'gon was BOC ...

Now I just use C02 straight out of a Soft-drinks C02 Bottle. Look for a Fire extuingusher company local..

Just do Local searches Like Kelly etc etc

Between £5 - £10 to have them filled ..

I use argoshield light from boc as i prefer a mixture but its quite a bit more expensive than just straight co2.

If I was welding anything thicker than Body panels then I would recomend Argon or an Argon Mix ..

About 5 years ago i 'bought' a 1mtr tall BOC bottle, regulator, gauge and associated pipes for a tenner, and at the time though - christ, that was cheap!

Now, 5 years on a mate borrowed my welder and is having a mare trying to get the gas filled up without signing a contract!

As i type the bottle is in my boot and i'm hoping i'll get it filled on the way home from work with the cap who did it last time out of his (impressive) shed!

I just assumed it was as easy as buying spanners, but it appears not!

I just had a leaflet through from this company where you buy the bottle, own it and just pay for refils as opposed to renting one from BOC.

For thin mild steel you can get away with pure CO2 but the weld wont be as neat as using CO2/Argon mix. If it was for stuff thicker than 4-5mm I would deffinately reccomend an argon mix.

Pure argon is not needed for steel. It's more for aluminium. It will give the worst weld out of the 3 on mild steel.

If you're just needing it for a small job or two, Machine mart sell small 110ltr bottles of both. It may save some hastle.

The best place is youre local pub i get mine for £10 its about £24 at a motor factors.

I got my gas from Adamsgas, was highly reccomended on one of the MIG welding websites i've used in the past, worked out to be one of the cheapest places with good delivery times too.

Argon mix every time for car repair i'd say. Makes for a nicer weld. You can as said use other gas but this just makes it effortless and closer to a pro look weld imo. You will struggle to get this though without paying rental on the bottle and actually being a trader. Do a search though as I got a small knee high bottle mail ordered to my home address without need for rental etc. Can be refilled for 30 bucks too. Dont remember the company name but could find it if need be

Argon mix is definitely the best for cars in my experience, but nowadays i don't do alot of welding so just get yourself a CO2 fire exinguisher and plug your regulator in, pin the handle close and away you go, it has a little bit more vapour in than the BOC CO2 so the regulator freezes after prolonged use in the winter when welding but if you wait afew minutes for it to warm back up its fine.

im in proccess of changing to adamgas ,cheaper than the company im using at moment and hope they are reliable unlike current supplier

i think the consensus is argon/co2 mix.
i did use straight CO2 and was okay for mild steel, but changed over to Argoshield light, as i'm doing more with stainless and the finish is so much better.
i'm using BOC as my supplier, granted £70 a year or so and £40ish for a refill, it is expensive, but cheaper than paying someone to make all the bits i've made with my mig.

fuck that, i paid 105 for a bottle rent free, 22 a refill delivered thats on mig 5

how big are the bottles?
i may be persuaded to change supplier if there is a decent saving to be made.
