For thin mild steel you can get away with pure CO2 but the weld wont be as neat as using CO2/Argon mix. If it was for stuff thicker than 4-5mm I would deffinately reccomend an argon mix.

Pure argon is not needed for steel. It's more for aluminium. It will give the worst weld out of the 3 on mild steel.
