I'm told by some "experts" that if I do a stage one upgrade on my 2wd cossie without upgrading the intercooler or fitting a chargecooler then my engine is at great risk of going bang. Is this true or bollox? Any advice most welcome.

it's not total bollocks, but it's not totally true either. if life was always black and white, it would be pretty easy.
the point is, the more that the turbo compressor compresses the inlet air, the hotter it gets. that heat needs to come out as it flows through the intercooler, and obviously a bigger intercooler gets rid of more heat.
if you don't get the heat out and have high temperature air being sucked into the engine, that inlet charge when mixed with the injected fuel is more likely to self ignite rather than waiting for the spark plug to light it up. that's bad, mmmmkay.
also, the time required for the mixture to burn will be less compared to a cold charge.
the weber ecu is programmed to measure the Air Charge Temperature (in order to estimate how much mass of air is going into the engine, along with the MAP), and if the ACT is high, the ignition timing will be retarded.
a retarded ignition reduces the power output and reduces driveability, negating the effects of the upgrade in the first place. at the very least, why not upgrade to a 4x4 intercooler for the sake of the 50 quid that they cost secondhand these days?

find a tuner/specialist that you are happy with and go from there, everyone has a different opinion on how to do things
