Thinking of buying a Cosworth engine for project car, help!!
Hi I’m in the process of building a kit car that was going to be powered by a bike engine, but since I’ve decided that I want to tour with it I want to look at cars engines.
I’m thinking of using a cosworth turbo engine but I don’t know much about them.
What should I budget for a 2wd engine a box in reasonable condition?

You'll probably pick up a decent engine and box for around £1200 but to be honest you would be as well to find yourself a complete car. Prices are low at the moment and you could very well pick up an accident damaged 2wd for about £1500- £1800, or an early high miler for about £2200. Having a complete car means that you can utilise the engine, box, clutch , brakes and loom. Then sell the remaining parts i.e driveshafts, diff, interior, bodykit, wheels e.tc to recoup some of your money, once she's stripped you will even be able to sell the vin plates and log book. You may be pleasantly surprised just how much the car will make when broken, even after removing the parts you want yourself

Put a Cosworth engine in a TVR so been through this. I would go for the 4WD engine if you can, extra 20BHP and you don't have to run the cats. It's got a few of the earlier 2WD engine problems sorted out. You can mate this to a 2WD box no problem.
It's a good idea to buy a whole car and strip it, especially if it's running so you know the state of everything. I didn't do it this way. Bought an engine, then had to buy everything else second hand, much of it on the word of the seller as it couldn't be tested. If you go to a breaker you will pay more, but you should have some sort of Warranty. Only thing to be careful of is if it takes you months to build the car and test the bits, they may not be too keen to give you money back so long after the sale.
