I used panel wipe and brake parts cleaner on mine, came up a treat....
I was strongly advised not to dismantle it, so I just cleaned it up

I'd also like to know if you can just swap the bottle over without taking the lot out as I have a mint white coloured one on the shelf in the garage.

You would need to drain the fluid from the reservoir completely and then gently prise the old one from the rubber seals holding it in place. I normally use a trim tool to do this.
Then refitting is reversal of removal. Your only problem will be if the old seals have swollen up. If they have, you will never get the new one in place. Refill with fluid and bleed accordingly as required. Oh, and you WILL get spilt brake fluid when you take the old one out an when the new ones finally pushes into place.
