i always try timing them back up first and starting them on any car and have sometimes been lucky but as said 99% of the time on cossies it will have bent the valves
i never use the standard ford nut on the tensioner i always replace it with a nylock nut

Cheers mate if it has done all the valves how much am I looking at as the missus is starting to put her foot down as this engine has just cost Ł1600
I might have no choice but to flog my 500 bumper and get it done out of that

Bottom end should be fine - lift the head and inspect the pistons for damage - if non it's fine, source another head, skim and fit with a new head gasket job done
Edit to say - to buy a set of valve would cost loads - Burtons do new 4x4 valves for Ł436.13

This happened to my mate apart from he was flying on the motorway when the nut came loose and bent all 16 valves and put tiny little cracks in the pistons.
Another rebuild needed with plenty of thread lock on the tensioner nut.

This happened to me also, a fair few years back, bent all the valves, one in turn dinged the edge of a piston which then left slight scoring on one of the bores of the block, ended up just getting another engine.
Hope yours isn't this bad, good luck!

I dont see how it came undone if 3 of you checked it.
Might be worth getting someone who knows what they are doing involved next time rather than risk another failure?
Unlikely to have done the pistons.
Probably done the valves.
50/50 on the guides

Not meaning to sound bitchy mate, but if 3 of you knew what you were doing how come it came loose after you all checked it was tightened? (and TBH why would 3 people check if one knew what they were doing, only takes 1 person to check surely?)
And more to the point, as im not mentioning it to try and have a go at you, but to help, what is going to be done differently next time to stop it happening again?
If it really was done up and checked by 3 people, you need to know WHY it came undone or surely there is nothing stopping it doing so next time?

Like I said mate its got just a normal 17mm nut holding it and a flat washer so I am guessing its wrong
I am going to replace the tensioner nut and stud for a new 1 this time
3 people checked it as I wanted to be sure on it all you know the rest of the build was fine its wierd how this has came loose
1 question tho which way should the tensioner be turned anticlockwise or clockwise?
I did clockwise is this wrong?
Chip should I loctite it next time?

Worth using the proper nut, even though they're a few quid each IIRC.
Also worth changing the bolts in the cam, I have had an old one of those work loose on me despite definately being torqued up correctly only a few miles before, luckily I spotted it before it came right off or that would have been equally nasty.
