Engine oil. Tell us what your using and why...
As the title sugests, what oil are you using in you YB? and why?
I'm currently using Silkolene Pro S. However this is no longer avalible so been using Fauchs Race 10w50. Why? because thats what this engine has always ran so just never bothered to change or try others.
I've just done a bit of a rebuild so was wondering what is now recomended and why....

I asked the guy who inspected my block and crank before I built the engine for my Saff this question. He said to use a 15w40 Semi if you can get it or 10w40 semi if not. Hes owned and built cosworths most of his life, and works as an engine builder.
Im running mine in on 15w40 Mineral oil at the minute, then I will be sticking to his advice and using 10w40 semi. Probably Magnetec.

I think recently in the yb world the silkolene range is a good choice amongst others and i,ll be using this on my new rebuild when its done. I,ll also keep mineral oil in for longer this time round .

I've always used 10/40 in mine but i'm not sure if it the right or wrong thing to do as like many don't know anything about what oil does other than lubricate.
If anyone does have any technical information to what oil to use.
Do you use a different oil to how much power you run?

I think the general thinking behind the more expensive fully synthetics is that they will withstand higher temps, better for trackdays or constant hard driving. I think in a road car, you will be hard pushed to generate the kind of oil temps a track day will generate, so a good semi is more than enough for road use.
Secondly, a fully synthetic will stay in grade longer. Ie a good 5w40 fully synthetic will stay as a 5w40 for extended service intervals. I semi-synthetic 10w40 will not stay in grade as long. However, the cost difference would mean you can change a semi-synthetic 2-3 times for the price of some of the fully synthetics.

^^ same here but seen on PF that its not everyones favorite , especially rod and his lab tests with it, iirc mobil 1 15-50 broke down more than others tested , granted its massive power though but still interesting .Haven,t a clue if a less powered engine would have the same results but makes me think its time to try something different in a road car stg1

i use castoral edge sport 10-60. not cheep at £55 for 4l but it is what i was told 2 use or millers.
funny how evary1 recomends silkoline as its so good. it is allso £45 for 5l. might just be that its cheeper and may be ok but who says its the best?
think a mag needs 2 do a test on this subject soon.

I have the big wing sump to Chris,it's difficult to get the oil right..lol.
Yep I use Silkolene Pro S 10w 50 fully synthetic, name changed to Fuchs now as mentioned above, same oil though.
Funnily enough I ordered 2x 5 litres today, special offer from the oilman 10 litres for £79 plus £5 odd delivery.
Thanks.Lee.

on a track car (especially with temps getting high) i'd use the fuchs (silkoline) stuff.
rod's test on the mobil 1 compared to the silkolene says it all really. iirc the mobile one had started to break down and had more fuel contamination after 1 top speed run than the silkolene.
perhaps rod can link us to the thread on the oil test?
also make sure you get the grade right. a sae 60 is VERY thick and could be doing more harm than good, even on a track car. i've found the technical articles on opie oils to be a very good read on the subject.

I always used Pro S as there's been a few of these threads over the years, but I changed to Valvoline VR1 last year, I have'nt noticed any change or drop in oil pressure and it is readily available locally and half the price of Pro S.

Always used castrol 10w 40 semi then people was going on about 15w 50 mobil 1 so i tried it, Well between me and my mates we call it leak finder cause if theres a small weep it will fucken find it Lol
Back to 10w 40 when its due!

odd that a 15w50 would leak more than a 10w40 as its thicker when cold and hot lol

Same for me in the racecar - from Halfords with a tradecard it's not too expensive and easily available.

and why do u use pro s?? please explain as im interested in noing as i no its the cheepest and u get a extra 1L than most outhers.
iv allwaysed used castoral but at £55 for 4L then post its expensive. but i no it is good and was fine on track also.
but as u lot are 15 miles down the road from me it would be cheeper for me 2 change and go with what u use. just wondering thow why u use it or is it just cost?

On track using Mobil 1, after a good session out the car would rattle like it had dry lifters, again pro s stopped this issue.

i have been using the 5w40 fully synthetic as reccomended on autodata and ford manual. i have noticed its slightly tappy when driving even though i have fitted new tappets though. does anyone think 10w40 semi synthetic would be better as i have that on tap at work for free lol!!

I've heard so many differences of opinion on what oil to use now i'm bit confused. Im currently running my saff in after a rebuild on 10w40 mineral, as i was told to use a mineral oil for running in, it seems to be alot thinner than i thought it would be and i have a leak comming from the back of the engine somewhere, i don't know if its because the oil is thin and find its way out, but i thought it was the rear main, took the box out and it looked abit damp so changed it, box back in and its still fookin leaking!! but i don't think its the sump as i used a new gasket and silicone...
i always used to use 5w40 fully before as again thats what autodata recommends, but now im not so sure what to use once its run in...??

Rock oil 10w 60 fully at the moment, ive used mobil 1, silkolene, millers ETC in the past and out of all of them, the rock oil gives better oil pressure, and doesn't burn as fast! and its £13 a tub as my mate get it through work.
