Sorry I have jumped into this thread. I have owned the car since March and it has been fine but I decided to strip it over last 2 nights and this is my outcome.

Well then..!!!! I have started the strip down and my intentions were to remove the pistons without removing the engine i.e strip top end and bottom end leaving the block and dropping piston.

BUT!!! Before I started to strip the bottom end I just thought I would have a check of the piston protrusion myself. I measured this using a calibrated DTI Clock gauge AND there is fook all wrong with number 4 piston.

My results were. Number 1 piston + .70 above block
Number 2 piston + .68 above block
Number 3 piston + .70 above block
Number 4 piston + .74 above block

As you can see from my results there is very little difference..

SO...... Where do I go from here. Can anyone recommend what gasket should be used with this sort of protrusion.

(PHOTOS TO FOLLOW)

Many thanks Steven

Pass.. I'm not sure myself. When I stripped the head off it had a multi layer gasket on which was the thickest I have ever seen lol. Maybe this was to overcome the protrusion.

Hopefully somebody might be able to shine some light on this

agree also..

have a measure up of the block see if thats not been decked too much, id just get another block and 4 matching pistons. id throw them ones in the bin, or use them as door stops. as they have had too much messing about with them.

"been there done that!"

I tried to restore a block that was sitting in a garden but the caps were just too rusty so ended up sourcing another block and pistons and everything ended up +25 as nothing fitted correctly, was honed, new rings, low comp pistons and i never looked back.

what about weighing the pistons to see how much more heavy no4 is to the others, i would then have to match the lightest pistons weight so all 4 are the same, or measure the pistons once they are out see what one is the tallest..! and get them machined to be equal!

if these results are in mm

like this...
Number 1 piston + 0.70mm above block
Number 2 piston + 0.68mm above block
Number 3 piston + 0.70mm above block
Number 4 piston + 0.74mm above block

then all pistons need a skim. they should be no more than 0.50mm i believe

Isn't this what MSD said at the beginning? The pistons are sitting too high?

I have spoken to James at MSD today and he seemed to think that .70 will be ok with a group a gasket. Still debating whether or not to get a little bit skimmed off. From our conversation we believe that the work on piston 4 must have been carried out as all four pistons are matching and same height.

Steventoon apparently it was just number 4 piston protruding higher than the other 3. Approx 0.5mm taller making it 1.2mm protrusion which was the reason for the 5 multilayer steel gasket.

Cheers

Might be ok with the pistons he already has, and just get the tops machined down
