Default rev counter issues

Hi
My rev counter and various other electric bits on the dash suddenly stopped working today. Also the alternator light is glowing faintly. Anyone got any ideas what the problem may be. Possibly the alternator!!!! Any thoughts appreciated.

Won't be alternator, check fuse number 22 (10A) this protects the instruments. You will also find the battery will discharge as this the ignition light is not working and this is part of the charging circuit (Excites field windings), if revved around 4000 RPM though this will start the charge process, i guess thats why the lights on as you revved hard so started charging.

Hi Mate

As above, it may not be your alternator and check the fuses first. I had the same problem with my 2wd saff last year and I changed the alternator Ł50 and it didn't cure the problem. In the end I had to take it grove garage in Romford and Mark traced this down to a broken wire within the fuse box.

This may not be the same issue with yours but do all the checks first rather that wasting money on parts which don't need replacing.

Dont laugh but I paid Ł80 to have my fuse box checked over... and it was a corroded fuse. They only discovered it when they took the fuse out and put a meter between the terminals and it all worked!

Look out for the white crispy corrosion - new fuse might sort it?

Another thing to check if the above fails is the wire has not fallen off the bottom of the fuse connector, will be something simple.
