If the speedo was working ok before, then the drive in the box is ok, which is NOT A BOX OUT JOB TO REPLACE ANYWAY!!
It's a 5 minute job with the car raised, there is a short allen bolt holds a plate locating the speedo drive housing, simply take allen key out, pull out drive bit, you will see the drive pinion on the end of it.
Some speedo cables eem to be about 1/"2 too short, so when inserted one end they aren't quite long enough on the other end, usually the box end, as the clock end has a brass ring to ensure minimum insertion depth into the speedo.
You have a few alternatives, I tapped the brass ring around the speedo end further along towards the end by about 10-15mm, this then left enough sticking out the other end of the cable outer to go in the speedo drive.
Also make sure the speedo drive end of the cable is 100% perfect, and sqaured off correctly, otherwise it will try to resist going on the drive pinion end, I have known people actually pull them to stretch them a bit, as it's sprung coil it won't do any harm, unless you trip over when doing it and put an extra 3 feet on the length!!
