Default turbo not spinning..??

Somat else i notice whilst 'faffing' the other day, my turbo doesn't spin when ticking over, spools up ok when you apply a little throttle however..??

I turned off the car, checked the shaft, its spins free enough; isn't catching the housing anywheres and has no excessive play.

Also removed the oil feed pipe (and coil lead) and cranked it over..no restriction in flow there.

Oil pressure is usually around 45 PSI when upto temp. Car still runs and boosts fine..

Definitely NOT normal, should be spinning away nicely even at idle.

hmmm..mines a T34 also

Its not that old either, from TurboTechnics. Do you think its worth getting in touch with them.?

Would the 360' bearing cause a little more friction making it stall at idle.??

Just to stick my 10p in - my T3 spins normally on idle - I'd be scared if it didn't!

Exhaust gas is constantly pushing the turbine wheel, even on idle, so really, it should spin. Unless you've got the turbine off a Rolls Royce Pegasus!

My T34 is a 360 bearing jobbie, with step gap seals, and it spins free as anything.
You can actually switch off the engine stood outside the car then quickly(not so quick in my case!!) rush to the front to still see it spinning to a stop, only see it like for 1 second.

My T66 bollocks around on idle it's the large ball bearing model so the type of bearing shouldn't make any difference to whether it spins at idle.

BB types will spin much easier as lot less friction, that's thier advantage in lag terms.
Bearing will make a big difference, but so long as lubed and ok should spin.

Yes but like I said at idle a turbo should always spin if you can turn it with your fingers your engine at 800rpm should have no problems.

Freshly rebuilt T34.63 for me - doesn't spin at idle, raise the revs by 2-300 and it spins freely. Perfectly normal.

In the absence of anything being said about a different exhaust housing I based my assumptions on a .48, this should spin even with 360, I'm not surprised that a .63 doesn't however.

What is your idle set to?

Mine spins at idle on a T34.48, but my idle is at about 1100rpm

mine is a .63 also

idle is around 900ish, and as above if i raise to around 1100 it spins.

Sounds like a .63 thing

You need to remember that the .63 exhaust housing is a big old housing and it takes a lot of exhaust gas to get the turbine spinning due to this

Mine doesn't spin at tick over, slightest revs and it does.

slightly higher revs like on choke, it does but if you stop it with you fingers it doesn't start again.

I put it down to extra drag on the 360.

Never considered it a problem, turbo performs as expected.

its a T34.63 BTW

ive got a standard one and that spins on idle about 1000rpm ... sometimes it doesnt use to and started clickin due to the amal valve -- took the lead off, cleaned with some wd40 and left overnight and it spins all time now without issues.

Just trying to think off ideas or speak to the lads who made the turbo and see if it should ... id hate to think it doesnt as it needs to get warm first before it used or it breaks quicker like anythin
