I must admit it was the 3-door that got me interested in Cosworths back in 86/87. A local guy took me out in his Moonstone one when I had a Mk2 RS2000.
As soon as the Sapphire was launched in 88 though I changed allegiances, especially after the road tests saying they launched to a 100 quicker and lapped the tracks faster than a standard 3-door. I think it was Gavin Green's ( an E30 M3 fan ) article in "CAR" mag 1988 after he'd had one for a week saying it was a faster sports saloon but more likely to punish you on the limit that sealed the deal. Nearly fast enough to take on the E28 M5 with 286bhp in his words
Had mine over 10 years now and like the low-key looks compared to the 3-door

When I lived up north I always got nice comments from people who know what it is. Since I have moved down to Derby I either get "nice motor mate, you don't see many of them these days", "Do you want to sell it mate" or "Is it real". I always wondered if there are a lot of replica's down this neck of the woods.

I can't pretend that my Magenta Saff turns as many heads as my rs500. It certainly does get attention though and is a much better (more comfortable and sophisticated) ride than any 3dr I have driven. A few weeks back I overheard a chap explaining to his girlfriend what the saff and cossies were etc. She wasn't too bothered but he certainly was

Do you have any Stories about recognition and appreciation with your Saph? or are they viewed as a kindof , cosworth - light ?
Also do you still get the usual stuff of corsas trying to race you, just because you have a Cossie?
I'm asking because i remember seeing in Fast Ford a while back , the Sapphire being described as a ' Wolf in Sheeps clothing '
And wanted to know if it went under the radar for most ppl ????

Thanks Ollie .
Always..

see people looking at it on the street, shouts from lads when driving, get flashed out of junctions & people pulling in on the motorway more often it seems too. Only other time ive experienced that is on the bike

My car is one of the 2 saph cosies ever imported in Cyprus.People here are so into jap crap that they think that is just a big old ford with a bodykit stack on it...thats until they have a go with it that is!!!We have a lot of evos and imprezas here running silly power so we have to keep ub with them. The other saph is runing about 500 bhp,and mine as u know is in pieces for the last 2 years being restored and geting a lot more power than a stage 3 kit. Here in the island there are 4 more saphs(4wd) one is standart the other 2 are runing stage 3 kits and the other one is at stg1.There are 4 escorts one of them is owned by a local tuner and is running 19"s and 600 plus bhp.The last escord is the one wich was feutured in fast ford a while back with 1000bhp drag engine and theres one original rs500 with 600blus bhp.All of them are frauned upon by other car owners as theres a stubit superstition that fords are not that special...Anyway i think saphs are the best cossies as u get a family car with potential to kill anything on wheels and mega drifting abilities

I got pulled by the old bill the first day mine was on the road last year as it flagged up their computer saying it wasn't tax'd or MOT'd, obviously once, and once he'd established that he started nosing around and said "it reckons its a real one on the computer" and laughed, i replied "it is!" he looked shocked and said "fair play, how does a young lad like you even know what one of these is, never mind own and run one, she's a nice example"
I guess thats my boyish good looks coming to play! haha

im a massive sierra fan,ive had near 40 of them and im 29y old now

ive had 5 saphs and my current 3-door,the 3-door sticks out badly cause of the looks and attracts alot of attention good and the bad kind of people,i honestly cant go anywhere in it without people rubber necking, taking photos on phones .thumbs up etc

but i seriously love the sapphire aswell its a lovely looking car, hence i have one of those too,in all honesty they say saph is the entry level cossie cause they can be had for 3k upwards

but id have a saph over an esco everytime, its not just a cossie, its a sierra and sierra is a great car unlike escorts imo

That cracked me up Tev! You're right, but it's so much more fun to smoke them! I got disco'd once though when 'educating' a Honda driver, car was impounded on the spot for 28 days and had to go to court. Got a good lawyer so managed to keep my licence. That was just after NZ got stricter street racing laws.

All Cosworths have their own appeal, personally like all but do love the Saph shape, and understated looks thats why i went for mine. As for recognition, plenty older folk seem to want a good look at it, mixed reaction with the younger ones, some know and usually respect them, others never even heard of them! lol. Dont get much racing which is good, but usually get old arseholes in diesel Vectras or Mondys up the back thinking your holding them up, floor it n watch them pull in a lane again!

Yeah i have the same experience. I can go out and nobody looks twice and then every once and a while someone will notice (cos they tnow what it is). I had a guy drive up a kerb trying to give me the thumbs up once.

They are an extremely rare car down in this part of the world and the only time i see one other than my own is usually an RSOC event.

That is a great story!!! Come on - you must have kept the number???

James - sorry mate, couldn't resist that pic after you posted. Watch out in the next fast ford mag as we did the shoot on Friday.

My saff is the mint toy as I've lovingly kept it since '92. The local rs club lads all want it so it does get attention. I'm sure it would sell easily if I ever wanted to.

Lets face it - the leather interiors are a bit special too eh~? Had a few petrol station comments on that score.

At the moment, I tell people I have no money cos I'm rebuilding my engine, and they ask what car it is, and you can pretty much guarantee they won't know what it is. I just tell them it's got 400BHP and they like it ha ha

My FAVOURITE experience was almost passing an Aston Martin DB9 in a race but had to pull in behind because of an on-coming car. He was shitting himself ha ha

My usual competition are the jap cars, EVOS, WRX's, Nissan Skylines, Silvias, 200SX, 180SX, Holden Commodores & Ford Falcon V8's or Falcon F6 Turbo. I was at some traffic lights once on a 3 lane road and I had a Nissan Skyline GT-R on either side of me. It was wet and they smoked me (4 wheel drive).

The people that DO know what they are here usually know because their dad likes them or because of their role in the Australian Touring Car scene, which is now V8 Supercars.
Sum's up the New-Zealand scene really.

My favorite take was an 11 Second Evo.

He was a mate of a mate and laughed at me when i said i'd give him a go on the m/way. Said to me 'In that thing?! Yea sure, if you think you can keep up..'

I had him on the limiter in his 5th gear.. Sitting next to him quite easily while he fooked his motor. Then i just stuck my foot down and left him behind.

I lol'd so hard

I prefer the looks, the way they drive and the fact they go unnoticed by a lot of people which means I stand more chance of it still being where I parked it and still in 1 piece when I get back!

That said though I still get loads of people coming up to me and talking to me about it.

And yes, I do still get the rudeboys on my back bumper when they clock the cosworth badge on the bootlid! They dont stay there for long though!

have to agree they drive better than a 3 door imo.

i had a few kids (about 8) coment on mine a while back when it was in my garage. 'wow loook at that cosworth' kind of thing. i gotta say i was quite suprised that kids that age even know what one is. it did always get a bit of attention when it was on the road.

The press certainly commented on the differences over the 3 door when they were new. Always amuses me when people say they handle crap as well - maybe compared to new cars but they were as fast as the legendary handling E30 M3s on all the road tests/back to back track tests when the cars were new. I think the BMWs enjoyed a better standard of care/mods over the intervening years...that's the difference.

Im a big lover of sierra cossies in any shape or form m8 and most people who like them prob have a fave one but cud appreciate it be it a saff or a 3dr or even a replica. Had two reps myself cos i cant afford a real one (yet) and even them used to get plenty of attention from enthusiasts, cossie lovers, chavd up saxos/corsas/novas etc. and even the local plod (got pulled for a 15 minute chat about it). my second one was by far the best of the two, full kit, 4x4 bonnet (eventually) centre-back scorpion exhaust, cloth recaros which i changed to leather from a 2000E etc. etc. to the untrained eye, it was hard to tell, until i started up the pinto or opened the bonnet obviously. did some colour coding under the bonnet which used to get loads of attention at shows even tho it wasnt a YB. have had twenty plus ppl round it at one time once. i love saffs personally and its no less a cossie than an RS500 in my view. 4x4s are nice but i dont like safe and grippy. u want grip? buy an Evo or some velcro. u want fun? get a 2wd saff. why? COS its WORTH it. LONG LIVE THE COSSIE!

Their kind of different but then i think the Escos is to the 3dr too - they all all have their own individual perfections.

Sapphires are more practical thats why you see so many families turning up at shows in them and for the same reason i'm thinking of getting one for a family car.

I'd love a mint white 2wd completely stock

I always get noticed in my saff.I think alot of people dont know what they are cause they are so used to seeing the modern cars.I think the 3dr and the escos stand out more and to me they are the proper cossies but the saffs are a more useable car cause of the 4 doors.

Went to visit my rs500 in the saff today - its in having repairs after a gazebo dented the wing at a windy show ;(

Suffice to say I came out to some admirers and on the way home got asked if if was real twice at traffic filled junctions - window was open in the hot sun of course.

So yeah - its got what it takes for sure
