Oil pressure on my saph is normally between 25-30psi on hot idle depending on how hard i've driven it, at normal cruising speed pressure sits between 60-65psi. I use Silkolene Pro-S 10W50 oil.

Would incorrect oil affect pressure. Say Mob1 0-30 for example, would this cause lower pressure? Have been thinking about this...

yes it can make a difference, Ickey has a good choice of oil, Silkolene Pro-s 10-50, oilman is doing a deal on silkolene at the moment.

A 0-30 would be like dishwater to an engine like this, as said go for 50/60 weight.

thin oil definatly makes the pressure drop, i ran my 309 on something pretty thin, and on very hot idle, pressure was so low it was off the gauge, put 20/50 in and it was always nice and high.

Any more ideas why it would drop so low on idle its fine when drivin and when first start it.

Im worryed now that its doin damage as it gets lower on idle it dont get more tappaty or anything. Could it be a fault gauge.

Well, the reason it's fine when it's cold is the oil is nice and thick, and when you're driving the oil pump is running a lot faster. So, your engine is either fubar or your oil needs to be thicker.

10-40 is too thin for a Cossie. Drive it nice and gentle until you put some thicker oil in it.

35psi i would say is too low for the engine
then again, 120psi is way to high as well

you want the oil to be at between 45 and 65 psi hot when you are driving

the oil gets thinner as it warms up so the pressure drops, but only at idle, the rse of the time it should be nice and consistant

The oil gets thinner as it acts as a coolant, probably more so than the water in the cooling system, putting a oil cooler on it would increase pressure by keeping it cooler, but use a stated one as it must not be too cool or it loses it's effectiveness.
There is no set point with wear on an engine, it would no doubt be a bit tired, but the big question is when is a rebuild needed varies from person to person and use.
I have had mini's in the past where you had to gently over a 30 second period coax the engine into stop clanking and build oil pressure, too fast rpm and it got worse so had to find a happy medium, was on 0 oil pressure for 30 secs at a time, admittedly they needed rebuilds!!

The oil lights are set so ridiculously low, if you see it it is almost guaranteed to be goosed.

i read today that it could be a sticking oil pressure valve in the oil pump.
does anyone now where about on the pump it is and how to take it apart.

thanks

its a sump off job fella you sure its not a faulty gauge i would have it checked firsts with a direct fit oil pressure tester is the gauge electric or mechanical??? i run 5/50 in my 4x4 after a good thrash it sits at 26psi and under driving conditions 50psi

All the valve is is a spring pushing on a ball or valve seat, under a round indented cover of about 1/2" diametre, they are pressed in when made.

you can take the pick up pipe off and give it a clean; but in my experience it never normally that that causes the problem

its a long old job as well; you have to drop the sump

first thing i would do is get a mechanic pressure gauge fitted, then go from there; do the cheap things first

if you engine is worn, try changing to a 60 weight oil and see if it improves

no point taking your motor apart unless you know for certain it needs a build

what mileage has the motor down?

ummm sounds ominous i'm afraid; new shells and new pump and low oil pressure already?

what did you do with the crank?

had it checked by a engine place to make sure it was ok and the measured for my shells.

hope its a easy fix like faulty gage or sender.
