Help! Seeking some advice on what to do.. Clutches
Hi all,
I have been having a lot of trouble with clutches on my car. It's a stage 3 Cossie powered mk2 escort running a 215mm pinto clutch. So it's not making massive power.
This is the second clutch i have had and i have only used it for 819kms of street use and it has been raining most of the last 2 months!!
This clutch supposedly has a 1000kg clamping force (which should be more than enough) and a sprung centre 5 puck ceramic clutch plate..
The first one simply just didn't have enough clamp force and now with this one after annoying the company i bought the clutch through for two weeks ... the verdict apparently is that it has died from abuse !! Pretty much 80% of the time it has been raining and even in the dry i have been taking it pretty easy and i have cheap tyres..
So it is my fault according to them.. although the clutch people have said that they will rebuild the clutch for free as a sign of good faith !! LOL
I just have to go easy on it next time (maybe use it as a paper weight or something ???)
The clutch company (NPC) has told me that the springs on the sprung centre have been bottoming out on their stops (which i assume would be causing a shock loading causing the clutch to slip) which is due to excessive abuse.. dropping the clutch / burnouts etc.. none of which have occured at this point
And according to them the springs are apparently chosen in accordance to the clamp pressure... so this should mean that they are right, right ?
The company i bought the clutch through keep telling me that they have done tonnes of custom clutches through these clutch people over the years and they had never had one come back.. yet this is my second to die in around 2500kms (including the 1000kms to run it in)
Ideally i should have gone with the proper cossie set up initially and i have been looking into going that way, although it would be a lot of work (including enlarging the trans tunnel) and a lot of money.. but at this point i can't see why it is so hard to build a clutch to suit a weekend cruiser with a little bit of power..
What do people suggest I do ?? I am open to any advice, as this is doing my head in right now..
I know that i am being lead on here.. but what can i do, other than find someone else that is competent..
As always any advice / comments on this will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Damion.
