Default ABS issue

The ABS light has started to stay on my 89 saff cos.

I've cleaned the ABS sensors and refitted but no change. However, how can you visually tell if the sensor is ok, as a couple of mine are worn down the plastic layer to the metal probes - Is this normal?

you can check the resistance of the sensor. mine were all about 950 ohms but one was infinite or open. you can also set your multimeter to ac voltage and spin the wheel and measure the ac voltage it should be between 1 and 2 volts ac.

xr4man - How do you do that? Via the multiplug which connects to the ABS Ecu or via the sensor?

Ok - Renewed one sensor now all are showing @1050 ohms resistance which fluctuate when the wheel is spun.

Have confirmed power from battery (pole 2 - ABS Mainplug) but no power from the main relay (ignition on 1) from either poles 8 & 20.

Pump Relay clicks after @10 secs from ignition switched on can also hear the pump.

As I can't get a reading from the main relay via the ABS Mainplug, is it worth replacing the relay or am I incorrectly testing it?

I've swapped the green and purple relays and abs ecu, but the light is staying on....

Also, I've noticed that the orange relay in socket 7 (main fuse box) isn't there. What is this relay used for?

If it's not there, how can you tell it's orange?

the manual says tp do it at the multiplug for the ecu. however i found it easier just to unplug the sensor and check at the sensor plug itself.

is there a list anywhere of which sensors can be swapped between which varient of carscars??

(purely for example an don't think they can be! )
xr4x4 into saph 4wd
sierra cos into saph 2wd

something like above, as it would be very handy to know!

Update:

Changed the dash and the ABS light went off....until I pulled the handbrake on and both the ABS and handbrake lights came on. Also, the pedal starting pulsing when pulling upto junctions.

Now the ABS stays on, the handbrake light doesnt work and the pedal pulsing when pulling upto junctions has gone.

This is driving me loopy. Time to get an autosparky out me thinks.......

Now the ABS light goes out after @ 10 secs but I am back to the ABS light coming on when the handbrake is activated and the pedal pulsing when stopping at a junction.

Any ideas?

Have had a autoelectrican look at it. Resistance of all sensors was fine, but the ACV's were all over the place.

NSF - 2AC Volts
OSF - 100mAC Volts
OSR - 4AC Volts
NSR - 13AC Volts

When I cleaned the reluctor rings on the fronts and changed the OSF sensor, the ABS light goes out but the pedal pulses when pulling upto a junction.

Then I replaced the NSF sensor and the abs light goes out and the pedal is no longer pulsing. However, when I pull the handbrake on, after @ 10 secs the ABS light comes on but goes off when the handbrake is released.

Any ideas as the car is booked in for its MOT tomorrow?

i had a prob like that the sensor light came on cleaned all the sensors and it turned out to be the float that warns u if your brake fluid is low had got a split in it and sank below the fulid line might be worth a try ?

change the fluid and see if this helps
the handbrake light coming on means there is a pressure problem with the abs unit
