I had a race the other day with a porsche in 4x4 i managed to keep up with him in the corners and stuff
but if i was in the RS500 (which is quicker) i would not have had the ball to drive how i drove 4x4 that for me i even think i will convert the RS500

2wd is definately the way to go. bought mine 7 months ago, love every minute.
On buying one, the first thing is to make sure its a real un, so check the log book, vin plate etc,
Try to spend as much as possible on the car, you will get what you pay for. however dont expect not to have to shell out for something in the first six months.
Service history is everything, if it hasn't got it , leave it alone.
check the headgasket, these are well known to go. If it has then there will be to obvious signs like mayonnaise in oil filler cqap, but also on the exhaust side of block there are often signs of leeks
The gearbox has a weak point in the syncro from 3rd to 4th gear
I found that both Fast Ford mag and Performance Ford mag have done buying guides in the past and these are availiable on back order. worth the few quid if you are looking a cossies.
Also the RSOC is very helpful, get along to your local group etc
