Default Puma 1.7 Mods..

What can be done to squeeze some extra power out of them NA, chip, exhuast, filter, cams, what would you see?
Do they respond well to turbo charging, what can stock internals take?

Cheers!

Not that great an article

The essence of tuning this engine is airflow

Exh manifold and cams and a remap will see you around the 150bhp mark, then throttlebodies ( and the associated new management ) and some bottom end maods to make it safe to rev will see closer to 185-190bhp

Google Shawspeed and Ford Sigma engines

you dont need any bottom end mods to see 185bhp out of a 1.7 zetec SE. Keep the rev limit south of 8k and youll be fine if you do head mods instead.

if you want over 200bhp and a higher rev limit then yes ARP's are wise for a start. Steel bottom ends are prohibitively expensive beyond that power level so youd be better off going to a engine swap if you want reliable 200bhp plus on a NA engine.

Arp don't make rod bolts for it,others do tho, I personally would update the rod bolts for peace of mind once revving over 7k

The 1.7 is more than happy with turbo charging. Downside is there is no off the shelf "kits" so you will need to plan and source all the stuff yourself. Cost wise, it won't be cheap to get it reliable, and depends on how much you do yourself and what spec you go for low boost / high compression or high boost / low compression.

they rev to 7250 as standard in FRP spec on standard rod bolts and will do so all day long so no reason to fit uprated bolts unless your increasing the rev limit much beyond standard. Plenty of people run zetec SE's reliably in the kit car world upto 8k with standard bottom ends.

the best mod i dont to my puma was the 4x4 cossie brakes. the second best mod was the piper exhausts 4-2-1 manifold, sport cat and rear silencer.

made such a difference to how the thing revved up a lot easier.

also had a K&N and H&R coilovers.

then i had to sell it

wish i still had it tbh!

My girlfriend has a Puma she used as a daily for a while and I loved it, was a great drive.

It's off the road now, waiting some treatment. Going to strip it out, fit some buckets and have some fun with it.

Think the 1.7 lump is being ditched though. Fitting a 1.8 silver top as got a low mileage one sitting about. Low boost turbo conversion with a decomp plate should kick some life into it

This was my 1.7 before some pissed up drunk driver smashed it up by crashing his Vectra into it while it was parked up outside my house. I loved it, was an absolute hoot to drive and caught a few out in the traffic light grand prix was pretty gutted when it got smashed:

Just did the usual mods of a K&N & exhaust, other than that kept it standard
