Idol rpm
Hello all again I have a 04 plate mondeo 2.0 tdci 130 and it sounds a little loud and tappy when idling but if I gently squeeze the accelerator to bring the rpm up a fraction it goes quiet!! Is it idling to low and what should it idol at??
Thanks in advance, shanti

There is an ECU update to raise the tickover a touch. Could be worth asking a local dealer how much they'd charge for an update - Don't let them insist on a diagnosis, as that's just an excuse to charge you more.
But before that, have a look down the left hand side of the engine at the pulleys and belt at tickover, if there's any noticeable 'wobble' then it's the tensionner that's knackered. Change the tensionner, belt and crank pulley. If it is that it's not urgent, as cars can go on for thousands of miles making a racket.

A quick easy test of the aux belt tensioner/bottom pulley is to idle the engine, then turn the aircon on. The extra load on the tensioner from the aircon pump made my belt really start jumping up and down and the noise increased considerably.
