Default Crankcase breather valve

I took this off today to have a look/clean of the thing and it seems a little odd that its that springy, how is it possible that the valve closes considering the spring pushes the diaphragm that hard?
Just for those who are curious the car is lumpy at idle and stutters around 1750-2100 rpm. The EGR, manifold e.t.c have all been off and cleaned but after 10-12 days the EGR valve was quite oily inside so i though i would take a look at the crankcase breather.
