Default 1988 Mercury Grey XR3i

I bought an '88 XR3i yesterday, I'm well pleased with it. Its only been owned by two pensioners since new, and has not been abused, Its showing 50oddthousand on the clock but I think its been round before. Overall its in pretty good shape for a 20 year old car. Annoyingly, the interior would be absolutely mint judgeing by the condition of the seat material, although the lady I bought it off has a rotteweiler/alsatian cross which has eaten bits of ALL the seats, so seatcovers are in place for a while. Things a little rocket though! This is my first CVH powered car and I'm gutted I haven't had one before! Its cool though, its 100% standard!

thats a nice looking motor youve got there dont worry too much about the interior they pop up on ebay all the time and its no aggro at all to change 4 bolts for each front seat and a hand full of screws for the rears.
heres a couple of pics of my old grey one she done me proud bless her until i sold it to a mate who crashed it a fortnight later

and i upgraded to recaros

It looks better in the pictures, though it is still clean for a 20year old car!
I like that malin, looks tidy also, mine has a scuff on the bumper the other side.
I think I may keep it standard?

Mine was standard bar the exhaust which i swopped for a stainless one when the original rusted away and the recaros which i got off a mate for a tenner. Just make sure you keep your eye on the oil and water levels and she'll do you fine.
If you want to have a look what i did with my other 3i click on the link at the bottom of my post.

Took some more pictures yesterday, then put some different wheels on. I think they really suit it.

New wheels on.

awesome mate.ive had so many xr3is ive lost count but the one that sticks in my mind is an old mercury grey one.G728THX.was real quick for a standard car.would just spin the wheels in 1st and 2nd even in the dry.all i did to it was put recaros in it,chop the springs in half and put s2 turbo rims on it.it bounced every where but looked awesome.really miss it.i gave it death everywhere and it never eva went wrong eva.i nicked the head off it 1 day for a s2 and left it in the barn and then my bro in law scrapped it.such as shame.amazing how we get attached to cars.

Nice car! Just needs to be lowered a little bit, a good cleaning and some detailing for the engine bay.

I also owned a mercury grey one for a few weeks... broke it for the engine...

No. One of the former owners fitted them foglights himself. But was quite a good job!

Angry at the moment.
Got the missus to tow the car from work to home, quite a journey, no problems.
Untill we get to our flats, then down the ramp to the car park, I forget to brake and front car goes sideways and now no indicator, cracked bumper and dented wing. What a c*nt. I feel so f**king stupid. More money going out.

Most probably was me, with my little boy! Was viewing a house to rent in your road, I'll probably be interested in that bumper, keep umming and arring about keeping it standard, but now with the wheels on I think I'll just do whatever with it, at the end of the day, as long as I don't go too mad, I can always put it back to standard.
Your Escort is lovely though mate

I would if your getting the bay painted. If your getting it done properly, I would say everything needs to come off till its a rolling shell. If your just getting it blown over its a different kettle of fish. I'm no painter though.

just to warn u red is a bitch of a colour to spray onto in a light colour!! you will probably find anywhere doing it will want the whole car primed first as red has a habbit of "bleeding thru" later on down the line!!!! and you will deff need the engine out to get a proper job done in the engine bay!!

A while since the last update, so here goes.
Right, got a new gearbox and clutch in there now, that is all sweet as.
Then my exhuast fell off. Litterally. The flared bit on the downpipe just sheered off, Ive had this happen on a 1.0 mk2 fez also.
Got that sorted, bought a new centrebox and backbox from SMF just a standard walker one. Also bought a downpipe off a fella who had a load of odds and sods.

While me and a mate were at the fellas place, we saw a couple of mint but dusty rear benches for an XR3i (88spec). My mate bought one and convinced me to swap all my fucked 88spec interior for his 90spec rearbench 90spec recaros and 88spec doorcards retrimmed in light grey to match the 90spec stuff. I handed over some notes for the recaros.

So, then not long after putting the exhaust on, the fuel pump shit itself. Not good. Recovered home and am waiting on a pump and hopefully a decent bracket too.
Heres some pics.

How she stands now.

No fuel.

Got bored whilst waiting for the recovery man

I have a saph steering wheel now.

Albie loves it.

I have a freind at my new flat.

Thinking of selling my wheels and getting some RS turbo wheels.

Come to think of it its looking alot like xrmalins one!
Got hold of an absolutley mint passenger side door card for electric window version, so will be fitting that soon and keeping an eye out for a cheap drivers side one too.
Still after a bumper but think I've found one, and two doors with electric windows all in place, just need spraying mercury grey from black. Bumper should be mercury grey already.
The reason for changing the doors is that someone tried to nick it by bending the passenger side door down before I got it, now it doesn't sit tight and lets in water when its sitting and air when its moving. I'm forever wet vacuuming the passenger footwell, I hope its not done anything too drastic to the floorpan.
Loads of little bits need to to it, but will get done in time.
EG filler is falling out of the rear arch, most of the bodywork could do with a tidy, although its not too shabby.
Andy.

You know, I thought I see it the other day, near Marion Crescent, but the arch was sorted and it had the rs bonnet. You had it long? That pic looks like Tescos in the high street to me.
