Default st24 overheating

as in the title, when i'm driving around normally it's fine and on motorways, but i've only had the car a week and wanted to see what it would do, was away about 10mins and the fans started coming on rapid when i slowed down, so i stopped and left it running for five mins then switched it off for about 15 mins, then started it back up went to drive home and the temp gauge went to red????? haven't moved it since, the water seems fine in it.
also what's the best oil to use? i'm a bit of a mobil1 faithfull what grade should i use?

sounds like the famous water pump impellor has broken, get it fixed asap, and try and get a metal one! THe original is plastic and this gets brittle and shears off
