We have a kuga Mk1 with 33k on the clock.
A few mths ago the kuga wouldnt crank fully to start as though its tries to get there and then stops...
So we had the batterry chkd and replaced which seem to do thd trick then it happened over again.
So we had the fuel filter replaced again all ok....
The car cranks n starts not an issue.
The car runs ok aswell again no issues.
We have started to use esso diesel synergi plus instead of the supermarket offerings....
Anyway no issues.
A week today it happend again and all week the same it cranks but not quite get there to start after a few tries it eventually starts and all is ok...
Its only does this in a morning though after standing overnight..
When my missus finishes after a 10hr day its starts without an issue but left overnight it sometimes wont start...

Any ideas anybody....

Heres a brief video you may require earphones..

Any warning messages on the dash?

This might be of some help. Have a read of this: http://www.kugaownersclub.co.uk/foru...opic13873.html

Maybe it's a common problem with diesel kuga's?

When it fires is there much smoke out the exhaust? Does the glow plug light come on and go out with the ignition?

I'd be concerned there is no glow plug light coming on. Maybe check the fuses for the glow plugs?

Yes, it should come on for 5 seconds or more when the engine is cold, bur you will only see it for a second or two when the engine is warm as it uses the engine temperature to determine glow plug operating time.

I sat there starting the kuga this morning and intentionally watched the dash as i started the kuga which by the way took 5 attempts..
No glowplug symbol showed at all........

So im begining to wonder if its the glowplug relay.......
If so do you know where it is located......

We nipped out this morning and i noticed that when we where starting up the kuga to come home the glow plug light briefly flashed up must have been for a split second while the kuga started as the engine would have been warm..
But i didnt notice the glow plug light first thing when it wouldnt start....

Hi to further our conversation i noticed that the glow plug coil icon lit up briefly at the start of the first attempt this morning....
It took 4 attempts to start today...
Also the glowplug coil icon didnt light up after the first attempt so for the next 3 attempts it didnt light up...

I would check for power at the glow plug rail when turning ignition on. If you don't have it then start investigating fuses / relays.

Well this morning it started first time.....not unusual.
Only thing i did different was tap the start button and watch the glow plug coil briefly light up...
Tapped the start button again as to turn it off then tapped the start button again and no coil light at all..
The screen dash says push clutch and tap the start button and whoosh first time.....
Unbelievable.

Just to let you know the problems have gotten worse....
Yesterday while the missus was driving the kuga she slowed at the lights behind a motor and when she put he foot down to move the engine had switched off....
Its started instantly when she pressed the button though....
This morning i spent almost 20mins trying to start the kuga and all it does is crank and not fire up.....
So the missus got a lift to work....
Later i tried to have another go after a few attempts still wouldnt fire up after cranking...
So then i tried to lock the kuga and it wouldnt lock...
So ive most probably nailed the battery and the battery is only 6wks old aswell and the fuel filter is only 6wks old......
Any ideas

Now the central locking from the fob isnt wotking.....
Ive had to lick the car using the key.......

He chkd the fuel line all fuel of fuel..
His gizmo said fuel pressure was ok...

No fault codes so he made it have a fault code by unclipping a wire...
Then that gave hime a fault code..
Battery died..
Gave it a boost and got it running.....
Then it showed him the valve was working so that came to his conclusion its sticking..
In an awkward place aswell.....

Well had to call the RAC this morning as it was back to doing its usual antics....
After much deliberation and speaking to the missus and getting running is that the anti shudder valve is the culprit more so when the missus told him that the other day when she was out driving and stopped behind another car the engine had stopped..

That again give him the thought that the anti shudder valve is looking more n more likely...

So it is now with our mechanic he dismantle it all and throughly clean it and build it all back up......

The mechanic we use who by the way knows his stuff said the other day that the anti shudder valve was sticking....
Well he was correct and he found out why...
The anti shudder valve as a recess where the gasket/seal partcially sits in.
Well the previous owner must have had somebody look at the car and didnt site the gasket/seal properly hence it was spraying oil very finely like a mist...
And through that hole it was sucking in air....
So once the engine was warm during the day the gasket/seal was holding..
As it was sat over night and cooled down it just sucked air in hence a reason not to start..
The anti shudder valve was literally gunked up and wouldnt work properly...
A new seal as sorted it and a good clean of the valve..

It's nice to get to the bottom of problems like that. They just drive you demented until you do. I've had my fair share with my focus during the 5 years I've had her.

Tell me about it. My wife's newish cmax has been nothing but trouble. Got an error up on the dash today saying child lock malfunction. It's always one thing or another with a ford!

Well this morning the kuga did the exactly the same crank n not start...
So as the rac guy showed her as you go through the start system to use the accellorater..
As she did and it started using the accelorator....

We have now noticed a metallic sounding noise in the area where the alternator and the belts are.....
But this metallic whirring noise is only audible when the foot is on the accelorator.....

Also there is a stronger smell of fumes from the exhust since the valve was sorted.....

Just been back to the mechanics..
After this morning performance...
He linked his system to the OBD and immediately got a fault code....
Never managed a fault code before unless it was a forced fault code.......
Fault Code P02FA..
That is the first fault code the kuga as shown..
So since the anti shudder assembly was distmantled and the valve cleaned it actually threw up the code this morning due etc its antics..

So its been reset.
Fingers crossed for the morning as its no fun at 4-30am and your motor is playing up..

We finally got around to having the throttle removed today and i had taken the old one home..
I removed the cover from the valve and the seal was broken and had an inch missing just right where the oil was spraying upwards...
I then noticed that all the electrics and connections had oil in them thus probably causing the problem every now n then not immediately starting...
The throttle valve is made by continental and dies anybody know where i can purchase a new seal for the valve cover as its a strange shape..
