Default Engine Management Light struggles...

My sister has bought herself a StreetKa and unfortunately the engine management light came on shortly aftewards

What is the best way for me to check the code without taking it to a Ford dealer? I borrowed ELM323 OBD2 usb cable and a laptop with PCMSCAN installed but unfortunatley although it detects the device via COM1 (both device manager and software set to COM1) it says

"Failed to open OBD-II connection! Error 104: Error detecting OBD-II Protocol."

From what I can tell online it means that the Ka uses a different protocol to my device/software

Anyone have any clues? Or recommend another way? I know its only about £50 to get a diag at dealer but i'm loathed to pay it

Cheers

The ELM323 only covers 2 out of the 5 possible protocols.
Try it with an ELM327.
