ST Clutch
Firstly hello all!
Bought my self a 06 plate ST225 as a treat to my self when i got back from Afghan.
So far I have JR panel filter, Scorpion cat back system with de-cat and Dreamscience.
The problem i have is that on the aggressive map the clutch is slipping. So have put it on the gentle map till I get this sorted but what i don't understand is how some ST's are running 300 plus bhp on a standard clutch!
Thinking of going the RS clutch conversion route. Waiting for MSD to ring back when the technical guy is back on Monday to find out a price. One place does it for £850 inc fitting.
Is it worth it? And why does my clutch not handle 270 ish bhp? I see feature cars with a huge lump of power yet say standard clutch in the tech spec. How is this? And does any where do uprated plates as I can't find anywhere. they all say the only route is RS kit.
The Volvo 850R clutch can handle 400+ bhp but found out that it will not fit an ST as they are totally different, the ST being alot smaller so that idea went out the window.
Any info on this would be great.
Cheers, Carl.

Mine is on 52k now as has just started slipping, has been modified to around 300bhp for the last 10k.
Dreamscience do the RS clutch and they fit it as well, I think total price is around £750.
To be honest it all depends on how it has been driven in the past. It is a performance car, so if it has been driven like one then you are going to get premature clutch wear. If it has been owned from new by an old boy who never thrashes it, then no reason why it won't do 100k!

Mines done 47k now.
Ex Rally driver owned it before me.
The dreamscience RS kit is £795 during the sale and £845 after the xmas sale which ends end of this month. I'm in Blackpool so means a full day in Hull unless MSD have a good price for something similar. I cant find a standard ST kit with uprated plates. A bit annoying having to now fork out 800 odd notes after 400 for the DSci platform!

I had the full RS setup fitted last year. Its likely that its slipping due to the weather / temp outside. Mine used to slip when it started to rain in 4th 5th and 6th. but wouldnt when it was dry.
Its not the bhp that matters, its the torque. With a remap, the ST is putting out over 300lbft torque. The clamping load of the standard cover isnt strong enough. When I removed my clutch, it was mint with virtually no wear.
If you handy with a spanner, you can remove the box on axle stands. Theres no subframe to remove etc. The RS setup is around the £500 mark for parts, thats clutch kit , flywheel and slave cylinder.
By the way. The RS clutch setup is cheaper than the ST setup !!!

Should be bread and butter for any mechanic. You could buy the clutch kit and have it fitted by someone local to you.

Been told by several garages that the ST is a full on pain to do, not like older cars. Its a full days job so buying the kit and finding some one to fit it is out of the question! Will put the cost through the roof!

Well you ask advice and then question it when someone offers it . It cost me £480 for the clutch kit from ford, flywheel, slave cylinder, driveshaft bolts, oil seals etc and paid my local tyre fitting centre (who do other mechanical work) £200. Took them 5 hours start to finish. that was 25k miles ago and still sweet.

I saw the RS set up in a magazine recently and could not belive my eyes when i saw that it had the dreaded Dual Mass Flywheel, surely that flywheel is doomed to fail. After my experience with the DMF i would always go for a solid item. The DMF may give smoother power delivery but it is a servicable item that costs a fortune to replace.

If it holds alot more torque than the standard unit and is not as expensive as an RS conversion then yes, very much interested!!!!!
If you can message me a price or link that would be awesome mate.
Could you price a Duel Mass Flywheel. Reason why i ask is I was talking to a mechanic about it and he mentioned that if the DMF is on is way out you can get a knocking on tick over. I do get a slight knock on tick over but no idea if it is the DMF.
So, if I have order one but no need to change it could this be returned for a refund?
Wont have the funds till end of Feb really, just getting prices and info early.
Many thanks, Carl.

Heres a break down of the parts on my invoice for the RS setup.
1670062 - Clutch kit - £116.58
1575135 - Flywheel - £293.05
1599267 - Slave Cylinder - £70.76
The rest of the cost involve, was because im fussy, and i bought every new nut, bolt and seal at the same time. I dont think you will get a complete setup inc flywheel etc for cheaper.

That doesn't work out too bad actually. I see DS charge an extra £150 plus shipping for the kit!

What dealership is that? If I have a name I can say 'so and so dealer charges this much so match it'.
Its what happened when they wanted £380 for a service, i told them to sod right off but they said if you find a dealer that does it cheaper we will match it. Strange like. I would of thought its the same price all over.

The clutch kit was supposed to be £150.42 and got it for £116.58.
The Flywheel was supposed to be £325.61 and got it for £293.05
And the Slave cylinder was supposed to be £88.44 abd got it for £70.76
so saved a little under £90.

If the plates are interchangeable and the DMF is part of the kit its not really that bad. It is pricey but what I mean is its not like you can get an 'ST' plate kit and thats all you need for little money.
DS do the release bearing for £80 odd to lighten the pedle I think. I can live with a heavy pedal really. This is good news though, thanks mate.

clutch kit £187.79
Flywheel £394.64
Slave Cylinder £110.40
Not doubting your price as i know all too well about monthly price increases, just though would give carlos a bit warning before he shouts the odds about prices to his local dealer

I gave up at my local dealers.
Managed to get the 2 plates, flywheel, slave cylinder and release bearing (genuin RS) for £500 £40 for spark plugs as I have a misfire with my DSci maps
All getting fitted next monday so hopefully the plugs will rectify the problem.

where to start on this bad boy. bought an st3 on a 58 plate about 5mths ago, its now done 19k miles and the clutch started to slip, took it into local ford dealers as it was only slipping on torque. they charged me £216 to take the box out to inspect it (not chargable if fault was warranted). they informed me that my beloved st had indeed been modded to the tune of an est 275bhp and that a upgraded clutch was needed . i sourced a helix uprated clutch kit from pumabuild consisting of uprated clutch, slave cylinder and a solid lightened and balanced flywheel , fords have fitted this for me and phoned me last friday telling me it now slips worse, i have read on some other sites that the master cylinder can seep air and cause itself and the slave cylinder to stay semi engaged so at another cost of £270 a master cylinder is being fitted in the morning, total cost so far as its been modded so im eligable for all cost is £670 for fords, labour for clutch and supply and fit master cylinder and £805 for the clutch kit, anyone else heard of this problem or am i just going to be adding the cost of a gallon of petrol and a box of matches to the total cost????

That is pretty bad really. To be slipping worse with a Helix clutch is bad news. I could not find a Helix clutch so opted for the full RS clutch kit with DMF. Have you drove it with the solid flywheeel?
Ive not heard of the air leak though, thats a new one on me. Can you come back and keep me updated on your motor?
Mine went in today to get done, the garage still hadnt finished it so got to wait till tomorrow.

no not driven the car since helix fitted just lost me rag and left it there til master is fitted, spoken to a couple of my mate mechanics and they say it makes sense, first ford tried to tell me the helix wasnt up to the job even though they are good for 400bhp+ then they tried to tell me the new clutch was faulty and today they agreed it could be a master cylinder as it would make sense why its slipping worse as the thicker clutch plate would be engaged more if the slave cylinder is not returning properly due to master cylinder holding pressure, and so it goes on i just hope it sorts it.

This sort of thing takes the fun out of owning a car. I have not enjoyed driving mine knowing that the clutch slips.
When I went to the garage though it looks like new!!! Now need to find if I can get any money back of it and the DMF.
My knowledge of mechanics is limited to when a washer bottle is empty so I really would not have a clue.
Ive just gone for the RS kit as a lot of companies are doing this as an upgrade option.

the helix clutches have to be run in mate or they will slip if some mechanic has just gone out and ragged it it will slip you need to puta few gentle miles on it and build the power in gentle can take around 150 miles to run in correctly hth

thanks big mac, nice to know the dealer that supplied me the clutch has informed me well..lol. the only trouble is the clutch has done less than 500miles when i bought it, this may seem bad but it was inspected by my mechanic and the ford idiot before installation to which the verdict was the plate was as new so all is well to fit..ARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH this bastard car !!!!!

I have Phil, took the garage a while to get it in. Car went in yesterday and got it back late this morning. Slightly heavier pedal but not by much at all. And not the slightest bit of slip on Race+ map so very happy. Just have to live on a tight budget for a while now!
And the old clutch looks like new! Will post a thread later to see if there is any where that take old ones and DMF's see if I can get a few quid back.
