Default Central locking problem

Has anyone ever had any trouble with the remote not working to lock and unlock the car?
I've already replaced the battery.
Sometimes it'll work every time continuously for ten mins, then other times it won't do a thing(lock, unlock or pop boot) for 20 mins of trying, then just suddenly work?!

My old Focus wouldnt lock at random. Think it was down to when I fitted ST170 interior door handles, I must have damaged the wire for the central locking.

I'm going to assume you have a MK1/Mk1.5?
I made this post on FocusOwners.com a few months ago...

Seems as of late a few of our Focuses have spontaneously developed C/L Problems.
The C/L Module is in the drivers side footwell, it's a black box with yellow plugs.
Due to it's position expecially in the winter it gets damp.
Pull out the plugs one at a time (try not to get them mixed up).
Check the plugs for any corrosion, if there is any then scratch it off.
Regardless if theres any corrosion give each plug a small squirt with WD40 and plug it back in making sure you lock it back inplace.

I found 4 wires that had a white crusty substance on it.
Since going this my central locking has been 100%
If this dosen't work chances are you'll need a new centrack locking module. Ł400+ from ford

Ouch...Does it have to be a brand new one or will a 2nd hand one fit?Either off another ST or a mk1 focus?

Second hand one will be fine, you can get a non remote one if you wanted to just use your key instead.

Have you re-programmed the remote? The instructions are in your owners manual.

If not then I'd be concerned that the transponder in the key is on its way out. If you go down to one working key then you'll need to get the car into Ford to have another key programmed (approx Ł100) - if you've still got the vague use of 2 keys then you can buy any blue-chip remote fob second hand, get a keyblade cut at any key cutter and program the new key yourself - hopefully before this one dies.

Why would a nackered transponder cause the central locking to fail?

What do you think holds the central locking code in the key?

I've come across plenty of knackered keys, plenty of knackered lock solenoids, a handful of blown fuses (which lives on the back of the fusebox) but I've never come across a knackered central locking computer.

If you are only down to 1 key already then you're fucked. You need 2 working keys for the car to program a third to work with the PATS and the central locking.

hi davemurphy...
is fucked the ford technical term???lol lol lol
Right...been reading a ford technical how to over on ffoc...
i have a spare focus 3 button fob(originally for my connect)so,i've managed to programme that to the car.
So i have to unlock with one and start it/drive it with the only original coz as u say the transponders knackered.
You can actually remove the glass transponder carefully but as mines goosed by the looks of it id be gaining nothing.
Unfortunately its a trip to fords tomorrow...
I should've bought another connect coz mines bulletproof and never costs me a penny...!!!ha ha ha

My Mk3 Mondeo's central locking hasn't worked for a year. I just use the key to open the doors. I'm not losing any sleep over it ha

Dave-yeah i knew that.My vans a tdci too,brilliant it is,just a bit thirsty but she's bulletproof.
I nearly bought a tdci mk1 too on a 53 plate,but for 500quid more i couldve had my st.
I bought the ST.he he
No regrets at all,i love it,all cars have there problems.

Simo-If i unlock the car with the key it sets the alarm off and wont start, mines an intermittent problem, not permanently broke.
