Default Anyone had ST170 clutch problems?

A mates ST170 clutch has failed at 2600 miles from new! The friction material had completely come off the plate on one side and embedded itself into the pressure plate. Has anyone else had this problem? On another board I've read that clutches have failed prematurely on other ST170's, tell tales signs are when depressing the clutch pedal fully the clutch fails to disengage and the car creeps forward (or backwards), this also makes 1st and reverse hard to select.

For a tale of shi**y handling of the situation by the Ford dealer read on.

No problems my mate thought, brand new car = warranty claim. No such luck however.
Day one: The RAC towed the car off to the local dealer and arranged a loan car.
Day two: The dealer failed to tell him that the loaner was only for 24 hours (hats off to National Car Hire for not charging him on the late return) and then the dealer said they had no courtesy cars available. The dealer next told him that the junior technician couldn't find the fault and a senior technician would need to look at it but there weren't any available (my mate asked something along the lines of 'are they all out with the courtesy cars?').
Day three: Dealer informed my mate that the wrong clutch had been delivered. My mate askes that the technician dealing with his car phones him to discuss it, he gets no call and assumes the clutch is being replaced under warranty.
Days four and five: The weekend, nothing heard from dealer.
Day six: Dealer calls to say the car is fixed and they want £430 !!! My mate goes down to the dealer and spends 1.5 hours arguing with them. My mate is blamed for the clutch failing and they said it's down to abuse (his previous car was an MR2 turbo which still has the original clutch after 65k and survived a track day at Cadwell Park). At one point the dealer throws his toys out of the pram and says they'll take the new clutch out if he isn't going to pay. Eventually to get the car back he pays a third and they were very reluctant to agree to even this, part of why they conceded was because they undertook the work without telling him it wasn't going to be covered by the warranty.

hmm dunno if ST clutches fail often

but that story is amazing.

very bastardous ford dealer.

when i have gurantee, then i have gurantee.

in germany for example won't be a problem.
at that age.

i know a guy with an rs that got his clutch changed after about 35000 km.... warranty...

This Must be universal thing because it is also happening to the US SVT focus. Most have been able to fight enough to get warrantied but Ford has done nothing as far as a recall.

I have 17k miles on mine and to me it feels that it doesn't grip like it use to but it is not slipping ether

Found this TSB that covers the American SVT, maybe someone with access to the info could cross reference the part numbers to see it applies to UK cars. http://teamfocus.mywowbb.com/forum49/4188.html

My 04 (53) ST170 is on 38,000 miles, the clutch pedal sticks down sometimes then pops up with an unsatisfying thud, it too is a shit to get into reverse and went through a stage a few weeks ago of jumping out of gear, then miraculosy cured itself, whining of the release bearing is apparent too, but i heard clutches on any car, let alone an ST170 are only good for 40 - 45,000 miles.

If it is anything like the other dual mass Ford set ups then i can imagine they are shite.
I m running st170 box in my Fiesta but opted to fit an ally flwheel and 6 paddle clutch, as i have heard they tend to destroy standard set up if you just slightly go beyond the book power figures.

Hi all, I purchased a focus ST170 about 6 months ago & having a few problems, I have a scratching sound when I switch off the engine ( around the oil pressure gauge area )
Engine sounds tappy/ticking
Vibrating accelerator pedal above 80 mph
Some loud knocking noise, not sure where it's coming from but sounds really rough on idle. The noise goes when I apply the clutch, have fitted a new clutch & slave valve cyli nder. Dual mass flywheel was slightly worn but ok. Have been told this sounds normall for the st170 & it's the 5th gear idle in the gearbox but I am not convinced.
I would be grateful for any help on these problems or advice

the ticking noise is probably the IMRC (inlet manfiold runner Control) adjusting itself, as for the pedal vibrating that is a worn throttle cable so replace it if you havent already after 6 years :-D
