They ALL sound tappety, more than likely the injectors. I don't think the tappets are adjustable at all as I think they are hydraulic?

hmmm, its only just started. doesnt sound like injs, sounds more mechanical . just been trying to find a pic of an st170s rocker arms, too check if they are adjustable. cant fine any pics lol.

I think it's just zetecs mate, lol. My 1.6 is tappy as hell, and it's not even done many miles!

thanks for the help, but its not the normal engine sound. something if definitely wrong somewhere. will pull it into the garage at the weekend. will keep everyone updated.

dont think they have rockers, just hydraulic or shimmed buckets over the valves, does sound quite serious though mate!

As said very unlikely to be adjustable rockers, most likely to be shim, the more aggressive nature of the cam compared with std can make more mechanical noise, shim stay in tolerance so long but I would check gaps first, easy job to put right, basic maths and a few new shims should put it right if wrong.

You can get different size buckets from Ford think they're 2 quid each or something. Not sure on clearance it should be but for example a 1600 zetec-se uses 8-10thou inlet 10-12exh.

Yup solid lifters on an ST170, never really found mine to be noisey if im honest, as Tabetha said check clearances with a feeler blade then go from there. Ford reccommend checking clearances at 100'000miles so much before this will probably be fine. Excess wear may be a sign of other problems, may be poor service intervals. Change the oil and see if it gets any quieter.

ah, 100,000 miles. its done 105,000 miles. service intervals are fine, every 6,000miles upto 100,000miles. ive just had it serviced less than 300miles ago, by a very good garage, the same one ive taken all my cars too, my mum and dad also take their cougar and jag there.

will get the feeler gauges out this weekend and check the clearances.

if it does turn out to be the lifters and they are worn and need replacing/ shimming, id think about replacing the cams too IMO

was debating that mate, but i havnt really got that much spare cash atm.

find a 2nd hand head cheap enough, or theres plenty of wrote off 170`s in scrap yards that mail order (car transplants for one) so cheap enough to just get some cams. dont have to be new, just from a lower mileage car

will try that, anyway, bit of a daft question where can i get some new lifters from? ford? just i cant seem to find them anywhere on the parts info (god, give me a old diesel ford transit, sooo much easer to work on lol).

There are no shims in the top of the solid followers of a ST170. If it had biscuit shims like the standard Blacktop, with the cam lift they either wear rapidly or get flipped out.

Adjustment, if needed, is by changing the whole follower. Like the shims, they come in a range of lengths varying by .03 or .06mm. Cost around £16 each though. Still cheaper than Kent Solid followers and individually ground 'top hat' shims.

Never heard of excessive cam wear on any Blacktop Zetec engine. I've dismantled engines with more than 150k with no measurable wear on the lobes.
