The drivers window failed on my old focus, was due to a microswitch breaking on the auto down feature. Required a whole new mechanism!

Make sure you get the right one though, as there are different ones depending on weather your car has auto down/auto up/global closure/3 or 5 door etc. Took ford a few attempts to get the right one for mine!

When you press the button can you hear a clicking from inside the door?

hmm, I could hear the motor clicking on and off when mine failed. Sounds like it could be something else, maybe the switch is fooked? Could be worth poking round with a multimeter before you go splashing out on a new mechanism!
