Unhappy Focus Tdci

Hi guys,

I'm planning on buying a Mk1 Focus Face lift model, diesel but I don't know much about them
Any help would be much appreciated
A few questions

What is the difference between the 100bhp and 115bhp Tdci engines? is it only the ECU?
Can the 100bhp version be upgraded to 115 by simply replacing the ECU?
Which model has rear disc brakes?
The 1.8Tdci engine is belt driven and 8 valves not 16 right?
Any comments on this engine? What should I look out for?
How does the Tdci compare to the Tddi? Which is better?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks form beforehand to anyone who could answer any of these questions

Regards

Andrew

This is something im looking at at work with a mate everything looks the same. it does seem to be all in the ecu

not as simple you need to take the 115 programming and put it on the original 100 ecu #

Which model has rear disc brakes?
the 115 bhp one would but it maye depend on trim spec

The 1.8Tdci engine is belt driven and 8 valves not 16 right?
right

tdci is better. tddi is mechanical fuel distrobution whereas tdci is common rail electronic injector control

Red face

Thyanks Gaz,

Very informative.

The programming part sounds a bit complicated.
I would obviously go for the 115 and avoid the trouble but the road tax is about Ł40 cheaper per year for the 100 here in Malta. If it was as simple as replacing the Ecu it would be quite tempting.

Regarding the number of valves,
I have an Autodata cd rom with all the data of most cars.
When I looked up Ford Focus or Transit Connect, there were 3 types of engines.
a) 1.8 Tddi
b)1.8 Tdci
c)18d

When I looked up the 3rd one and looked up 'timing belt renewal' the diagram showed 2 camshaft pulleys (DOHC) and this type of engine is chain driven not belt.
Has anyone ever heard of this engine? The program gave me all the data on this engine so it must exist but I've never seen it on a Focus or Connect.

The 1.8D is the old non turbo engine used in Escorts and Fiesta but that was belt not chain.

Tddi is a poor performer compared to Tdci.

the programming thing is easy enogh if you know your way round the diagnostics gear. i will find out if you can just swap the ecu's over. i dont think youcan as they are linked to the pats

Cool

Sorry,
my mistake,
was actually a 2.4 Transit Tdci engine I was looking at.

I asked about the ECU because it is quite a similar story with the Fiesta RS1800
the XR2 is 105bhp and the RS is 130. The main difference is the Ecu, cam profile and trottle body diameter.
Would be nice to know whats different on the diesels.
Regarding the car itself (and the engine), I'm planning on buying one with under 100k miles and then drive it down to Malta, which is about 1600 miles away.
What should I look out for?
What are the major faults in the Focus?
