Limited revs?

Limited revs?
Hi all. Am new to the forum and hope you guys can help.
I got a mk1 T reg, 1.8 last year and love the old thing.
I live in Aberdeen in Scotland and took the family on holiday to Ayr in South Scotland. On the way down after a couple of hours drive it started limiting the revs to 2000.
I stopped for 5 minutes then started off and it was fine.
On the way back it did it 3times.
After that nothing till this year it started doing on any type of journey over 2miles, dosent matter if I have lots of fuel or a little.
Any suggestions?
